Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to inform you of my intention to be an active participant in the upcoming global food event scheduled to hold in the second quarter of this year.

Nigeria is a blessed country that prides itself in a rich cultural heritage and that also includes traditional food and delicacies. Hence I am delighted to showcase a popular dish which is very versatile among its numerous ethnic groups. I would love to present the Nigerian Jollof Rice in this all important ceremoney.

Jollof rice, which is a staple food is made out of locally produced grains of rice as the major ingredient. In addition, other ongredients like fresh tomatoes, pepper as well as onions are used in the preparation process.

It is usually served with any protein of choice, most commonly grilled or fried poultry.

I believe it will be a food that will be acceptable by students from all over the world, hence it should be included as part of the foods to be showcased during the event.

I look forward to getting your approval for this meal to be included.

Yours faithfully,

Ohue Juliana

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly offered to make a popular dish from your country by stating, 'I would love to present the Nigerian Jollof Rice,' described the dish by explaining that it is made from 'locally produced grains of rice' along with ingredients like 'fresh tomatoes, pepper as well as onions,' and explained why it should be included because 'it will be a food that will be acceptable by students from all over the world.' The tone of the letter is appropriately polite, formal, and enthusiastic for a general training task. Your ideas are relevant and well-developed, fully satisfying the requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your letter is easy to follow, and the information is logically sequenced from your initial offer to the description of the dish, followed by your justification for its inclusion. You have used paragraphing appropriately to group related ideas together. Cohesive devices such as 'Hence', 'In addition', and 'It is usually served' are used effectively to guide the reader through your text. Although referencing and cohesion are generally clear, the overall progression could be slightly tighter to reach the higher bands. However, you maintain a clear and logical organisation throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some attempts at less common and topic-specific items, such as 'rich cultural heritage', 'versatile', and 'staple food'. There is a minor spelling slip ('ongredients' instead of 'ingredients') and a slight lexical collocation issue ('scheduled to hold' is better phrased as 'scheduled to take place'), but these do not impede communication. Your phrasing is generally natural and appropriate for a letter of this type, allowing you to clearly convey your message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over your grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'Jollof rice, which is a staple food is made out of locally produced grains...' and 'I believe it will be a food that will be acceptable by students...'. While there are a few minor punctuation and phrasing inaccuracies, such as missing commas around relative clauses and the preposition error in 'prides itself in' (instead of 'prides itself on'), the majority of your sentences are clear and your grammatical errors rarely impede communication.
