Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this regarding an event that our club is organising to celebrate popular food items from every corner of the world. As a member of an international students club I want to introduce a dish from my country.

In my country, various dishes are cooked during festivals but I would like to offer one famous sweet dish which is usually made on Ganesh day, it is known as Modak. On this day, it is served at the temples at no cost and people love to eat this delicious sweet.

This dish consists of numerous ingredients such as semolina, almonds, cashews, white flour, refined oil and some other healthy nuts. It is mostly cooked at home by the women and they make approximately hundreds of modaks to serve people at temples.

I would like to include this particular dish in the event because so many

individuals are not aware of this sweet dish, I want to introduce this because it is really healthy as it includes nuts in it and it is also presented nicely with minimal food color decoration.

I hope you will consider my food item so that people could enjoy it and taste it. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Navpreet Dhillon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student has successfully covered all bullet points outlined in the task prompt. You clearly addressed the prompt by offering to make a popular dish named Modak, describing its ingredients and preparation methods, and explaining why it should be included in the event, specifically highlighting its health benefits and unique presentation. The tone is suitably friendly and appropriate for a letter to a club organiser. The ideas are adequately developed and relevant throughout, fulfilling all the requirements of a General Training Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear overall logical organisation, beginning with an appropriate opening greeting and moving smoothly through the required points across well-defined paragraphs. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as the introduction of the dish, its ingredients, and the reasons for inclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes slightly mechanical, relying on basic connectors or repetitive referencing (e.g., repeating 'this dish' and 'sweet dish'). Despite these minor limitations, the progression of ideas is easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating specific terms related to food and cooking such as 'semolina', 'almonds', 'cashews', and 'refined oil'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though certain phrasings are slightly repetitive or literal, such as 'healthy nuts' and 'minimal food color decoration'. Word choice is generally clear and appropriate, and although minor lexical imperfections exist, they do not impede communication at all.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with generally good control over basic structures. Examples such as 'In my country, various dishes are cooked during festivals but I would like to offer one famous sweet dish...' show an ability to join clauses effectively. However, there are some minor punctuation and run-on sentence issues, such as comma splices (e.g., '...is known as Modak, On this day...' where a period was substituted with a comma in spirit, or '...sweet dish, I want to introduce this...'). The majority of sentences are clear and grammatical errors rarely impede comprehension.
