Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing good. I am a member of an International Student's culb. As our club have already talked to you about an event to celebrate popular food items from all over the world. I am from India, specifically from region Punjab. I want to request you to make a popular dish from my country.

No doubt there are significant number of favourite dishes in India. But I want you to make dish named Biryani. It is usually the basmati rice cooked with various masalas and vegetables. If you could then also add some chicken pieces in it for good flavour.

I know it would be bit difficult for you but believe me everyone would love this. It should be included in this event because it is widely famous dish which is loved by almost every person. Even I have offered this to some of my non-indian friends, they enjoyed every bite of it.

Yours faithfully

Avneet Sidhu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required in the prompt successfully. You have clearly offered to make a popular dish from your country by stating, "I want to request you to make a popular dish from my country" and naming Biryani. You also described what the dish is, explaining that "It is usually the basmati rice cooked with various masalas and vegetables." Finally, you explained why it should be included, noting that "it is widely famous dish which is loved by almost every person." Although the tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, the organisation of the opening sentences is a bit mixed, blending the club introduction with your request rather abruptly. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical letter structure, starting with an informal greeting ("Dear Luis,") and ending with an appropriate sign-off ("Yours faithfully / Avneet Sidhu"). However, paragraphing is somewhat problematic; the first paragraph is extremely dense and attempts to cover too many different ideas at once, including club membership, the global food event, your home region, and your food request. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes faulty, such as the sentence fragment starting with "As our club have already talked to you..." which lacks a main clause, and the transitional phrase "If you could then also add..." which feels somewhat mechanical. Referencing and logical progression can be improved for better readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task, allowing you to successfully convey your message about Indian cuisine. You attempt some less common vocabulary items such as "masalas," "significant number," and "widely famous." However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score. For instance, you wrote "I hope you are doing good" instead of "doing well," and "significant number of favourite dishes" rather than popular dishes. Additionally, there are minor expression issues like "region Punjab" instead of "the Punjab region." Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical control remains at a standard operational level rather than demonstrating flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms in your letter, such as "If you could then also add some chicken pieces in it for good flavour." However, your writing contains several noticeable grammatical errors and awkward structures. For example, "As our club have already talked to you..." contains a subject-verb agreement error (club has) and forms an incomplete dependent clause. You also omitted articles in places, such as writing "name Biryani" instead of "a dish named Biryani" or "it would be bit difficult" instead of "a bit difficult." Punctuation errors are also present, such as joining independent ideas with commas inappropriately or missing punctuation. These errors occur frequently enough to impede smooth reading in places.
