Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I am writing this letter to you today, because I want to be a participant in the upcoming popular food event that will be held in 2 weeks.
I am would like to share one of the best dishes from my country which is called Koshari. It is a very popular meal in Egypt, cheap and convenient to most of diets. there are many places there which sell this meal regularly.
This dish consists of various ingredients starting with cooked white rice which is the base for it, then brown lentils, pasta with different shapes as sphaghetti and small rings. Mix these components together in one plate and adding tomato sauce. there are unique condiments as vinegar and lemon which add some acidity to the taste.
Presence of this dish in the event would show diversity in the cultures and represent the egyptian side more through their diet. Moreover, Koshari is one the first ten popular dishes all over the world in 2025.
Kind regards,
Fady

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points of the prompt. You begin by offering to make a popular dish from your country, mentioning the upcoming food event. You then clearly describe the dish, Koshari, detailing its base components like white rice, brown lentils, and pasta, alongside the tomato sauce and condiments. Finally, you explain why it should be included by highlighting cultural diversity and its recent global popularity. All parts of the task are addressed adequately with relevant ideas, though some of the descriptions and explanations are a bit brief and could be extended further. Overall, the purpose of the letter is fully achieved and the tone is appropriate for a club event organiser. Therefore, this performance aligns well with Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 based on the level of idea development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement with an appropriate opening and sign-off. Paragraphing is used logically to separate the introduction, the offer and description of the dish, and the justification for its inclusion. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty. For instance, sentences like 'Mix these components together in one plate and adding tomato sauce' lack smooth grammatical transitions, and referencing in phrases like 'represent the egyptian side more through their diet' is a bit awkward. Transitional markers are used moderately (e.g., 'Moreover'), but overall progression could be more fluid. These features place the text securely in the Band 6 category.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully naming food ingredients such as 'brown lentils', 'sphaghetti', 'condiments', 'vinegar', and 'lemon'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'convenient to most of diets' and 'diversity in the cultures'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'convenient to most of diets' (suitable for most diets) and spelling slips like 'sphaghetti'. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is never impeded. The lexical range is sufficient for the task and fits the descriptor for Band 6 well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter to you today, because I want to be a participant...' and 'Presence of this dish in the event would show diversity...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout, including 'I am would like to share', 'most of diets', and missing articles ('in one plate', 'the egyptian side'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization at the beginning of sentences ('there are unique condiments'). While these errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score, they rarely impede overall communication, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6.
