Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The letter is addressed to Luis, offers to make a popular dish from the writer's country, describes the dish as biryani highlighting its delicious and spicy nature, and explains why it should be included by noting its popularity among international students and its potential to raise club funds. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a club organiser, though some parts are slightly repetitive and conversational. Overall, the ideas are sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task, earning a solid Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response shows a coherent overall arrangement of ideas, starting with a friendly opening, moving through the proposal and description, and concluding with a polite sign-off. However, the text suffers from a lack of proper paragraphing, as the entire body of the letter is written as a single dense block of text instead of distinct paragraphs for different points. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes repetitive, relying heavily on connectors like 'and' and 'so'. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of structured paragraphing pulls the coherence score down, resulting in a Band 5.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The lexical resource is adequate for the task, demonstrating a satisfactory range of vocabulary suitable for a general social letter. The writer attempts some less common terms and descriptive adjectives, such as 'international students', 'opportunity', and 'delicious and spicy'. However, there are notable limitations and informal phrasing, such as 'desi food' and repeated use of the word 'dish' without varied synonyms. There are also minor lexical slips like spelling 'member' as 'memeber'. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message clearly, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability to link clauses together. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several run-on sentences joined by conjunctions without adequate punctuation, such as 'So we should make this dish for individuals who likes to eat desi food and this dish is called biryani...'. Subject-verb agreement errors are present, such as 'individuals who likes' instead of 'like'. Informal abbreviations like 'u' are used instead of 'you', and punctuation at sentence boundaries is occasionally neglected. These errors cause some disruption, placing the grammar at a Band 5.5.
