Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to suggest a famous dish from my country that I cook so well, for the event that our club is organizing to celebrate popular international cuisines.

I wanna recommend butter chicken, which is one of the speciality of India. People of my country are fond of this dish. It's made up of so many delicious ingrediants like cashews, chicken, onions, tomatoes ,and authentic Indian spices. The gravy is finger licking good and it tastes amazing if tried with garlic nans which is a kind of bread.

It's quite popular worldwide. Most people like this dish and I'm pretty sure that our club members will also love it. The other reason is most people of our club are non-vegitarian, and they would like a little twist in the food. I already talked with the other members and they wanted this dish included in the event.

I hope you will think about my recommendation, and give you answer ASAP, so that I could start preparing for this event.

Regards,

Shubham

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student covers all bullet points required by the prompt effectively. You clearly offer to make a popular dish from your country by stating, "I wanna recommend butter chicken." You describe what the dish is with details about its ingredients, such as "cashews, chicken, onions, tomatoes," and explain why it should be included by mentioning that "most people of our club are non-vegetarian" and that members wanted this dish. The tone is appropriately informal for a letter to a club organizer named Luis, and the purpose is clear throughout. While some ideas could be slightly more expanded, all requirements of the task are adequately met, corresponding to a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing, moving from the introduction and offer to the description, the reasons for inclusion, and finally a polite closing. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as "which is one of the speciality of India" and "The other reason is...", though some transitions feel a bit basic or slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of the letter flows well, making it easy for the reader to follow the writer's thoughts from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like "speciality", "ingredients", and "worldwide". However, there are some informal or colloquial expressions, such as "I wanna" and "finger licking good", alongside minor vocabulary errors like "ingrediants" (spelling) and "speciality of India" (grammar/word choice). While the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the ideas clearly, the presence of these errors and informal slips prevents the lexical score from reaching higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ("which is one of the speciality of India") and conditional/temporal clauses ("so that I could start preparing"). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, including "that I cook so well" instead of 'which I cook very well', "made up of" instead of 'made with', and the spelling error "vegitarian". Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are minor comma splices or spacing issues around commas (e.g., "tomatoes ,and"). These errors do not impede communication, allowing the text to achieve a Band 6.0.
