Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to express my interest to include an authentic Indian dish to our upcoming food event.

As you may know, I am from India and it is diverse country in terms of food and culture. I would be very happy to share some of our traditional dishes such as Biriyani and Bhaji. As a result people can try and explore authentic taste of India.

As I mentioned, I would bring Biriyani as it contains brown rice, chopped vegetables and home-made spices. Whereas, Bhaji invloves breads and potatoes with authentic spices and serves with green chatni. Both the items are easy to prepare and delicious.

I strongly believe that, this authentic dishes from my country will make huge and positive impact globally as it represents typical indian taste and home-made spices.

I trust that you will go through this letter and I am hoping to hear back from you soon. Thank you for your time.

Kind regards,

Kanu.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You offered to make popular dishes from your country, specifically mentioning Biriyani and Bhaji, and described them well by outlining their ingredients such as brown rice, chopped vegetables, and home-made spices. Furthermore, you explained why these dishes should be included in the event, noting that they are easy to prepare, delicious, and will make a positive global impact by representing typical Indian tastes. Your tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal for a letter to an event organiser. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed with clear purpose and well-developed ideas, fulfilling the requirements for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter has a clear overall logical organization and progression. You begin with an appropriate salutation and a standard opening statement of purpose. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate your introduction, your offer and description of the dishes, the justification for their inclusion, and your polite closing remarks. Cohesive devices such as 'As you may know', 'As a result', and 'Whereas' are used to connect your ideas, although there is occasional slight awkwardness in how sentences are linked, such as 'As I mentioned, I would bring Biriyani'. Overall, your ideas flow logically and are easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly and with some precision. You successfully used less common and topic-specific items such as 'authentic', 'traditional dishes', 'home-made spices', and 'globally'. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and minor spelling errors, such as 'invloves' instead of 'involves', 'chatni' instead of 'chutney', and a minor grammatical collocation slip in 'interest to include' rather than 'interest in including'. Despite these minor flaws, your vocabulary is varied enough to convey your message accurately without causing any difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully, such as 'I strongly believe that, this authentic dishes from my country will make huge and positive impact globally'. However, there are a few noticeable grammatical errors, such as a subject-verb agreement issue ('this authentic dishes... will make'), a missing article ('make a huge and positive impact'), and a punctuation error with an unnecessary comma after 'believe that'. Despite these errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and communication is never impeded. The majority of your sentences are clear and well-structured.
