Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am really excited for the upcoming food fest.
I would also like to participate in the event. It would be a pleasure for me to bring a dish from my local cusine.
The dish that I have in mind is Butter Chicken. Although the name is self explanatory, I would still describe it is as a rich butter base gravy with succulent chicken. The spice level can be tailored as per the specific requirements.
As the dish is non spicy, I believe it would be the best choice. to introduce our traditional cuisine to foreigners. You wouldn't have to worry about anyones spice tolerance as people usually negatively associate desi food with untolerable spice level.
I wish you all the best with the preperations and I look forward to your reply.
Kind regards,
Amanda Cyrus

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The candidate covers all three bullet points required by the prompt by offering to make Butter Chicken, describing it as a rich butter-based gravy with succulent chicken, and explaining why it is a great choice to introduce traditional cuisine without intimidating people with high spice levels. The tone is appropriately friendly and semi-formal for a club letter. However, the response has a minor negative impact on Task Achievement due to length. As noted in the instructions, the word count is 145 words, which falls short of the mandatory 150-word minimum. Because this length requirement is not met, a slight penalty is applied to the Task Achievement score, reflecting an incomplete word count despite the satisfactory content and clear bullet point coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter maintains a logical structure and clear progression of ideas throughout. The response opens with an appropriate salutation and friendly opening, moves naturally into the offer to participate, describes the dish, explains its suitability, and concludes with polite closing remarks and sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, the offer, the description, the justification, and the conclusion into distinct blocks. Cohesive devices are used adequately with phrases like 'The dish that I have in mind' and 'As the dish is non spicy'. While referencing and transitions are straightforward rather than highly sophisticated, the overall arrangement is entirely coherent and easy to follow, supporting a solid band score for this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate and functional range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases such as 'upcoming food fest', 'self explanatory', 'succulent chicken', and 'spice tolerance' show a good attempt at incorporating topic-specific leexis. However, there are a few lexical and spelling errors that prevent a higher score. For instance, 'cusine' is misspelled, 'non spicy' lacks a hyphen, 'anyone's' is missing an apostrophe, and 'untolerable' is incorrect (intolerable should be used). Furthermore, 'preperations' is misspelled in the final paragraph. Despite these errors, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary remains appropriate for a general correspondence task, fitting comfortably within the band six descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and concessive structures like 'Although the name is self explanatory, I would still describe it is as...' and 'As the dish is non spicy, I believe it would be the best choice to introduce our traditional cuisine...'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, notably the double verb 'describe it is as', a missing comma before 'to introduce', and spelling/word formation slips. However, the majority of the simple sentences are accurate, and the errors do not impede communication or obscure the writer's meaning. The range of grammar deployed aligns well with the expectations for a competent performance at this level.
