Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are well. I am really excited about the upcoming international food event, and I would be delighted to prepare a popular dish from my country.

The dish I have in mind is butter chicken. It is a rich and creamy dish made with tender pieces of chicken cooked in a buttery tomato-based sauce. Although it contains several spices, the level of heat can easily be adjusted to suit different tastes.

I think it would be a great addition to the event because it is a well-known South Asian dish but is also relatively mild. Some people assume that our cuisine is always extremely spicy, so butter chicken would be a good way to introduce them to its rich flavours without making the dish too hot.

I wish you all the best with the preparations and look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Amanda Cyrus

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

Amanda successfully covers all parts of the task prompt in a natural and engaging manner. She opens by offering to make a popular dish from her country, specifically identifying butter chicken. She then clearly describes what the dish is, mentioning that it consists of tender pieces of chicken in a rich, creamy, tomato-based sauce with adjustable heat levels. Furthermore, she effectively explains why it should be included in the event, noting that it provides a familiar, approachable entry point for people who might be hesitant to try overly spicy South Asian cuisines. All bullet points are fully and appropriately developed for a general training letter, and the tone is polite, enthusiastic, and entirely suitable for communicating with an event organiser named Luis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates a clear and logical organisation from beginning to end. Paragraphing is used very effectively and purposefully: the introduction establishes the purpose of the letter, the second paragraph describes the dish, the third explains its suitability for the club event, and the final paragraph brings the letter to a polite close. Cohesive devices such as 'Although it contains', 'I think it would be', and 'so butter chicken would be' are employed naturally to guide the reader through the text without any mechanical feel. Referencing throughout the response is consistently clear, ensuring seamless progression between ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

Amanda demonstrates a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to the topic of food and cultural events. She successfully incorporates less common lexical items and descriptive phrases such as 'upcoming international food event', 'rich and creamy dish', 'tomato-based sauce', and 'relatively mild'. Word choice and collocations are generally accurate and natural, for instance, 'level of heat can easily be adjusted' and 'introduce them to its rich flavours'. There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that detract from the fluency of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The letter features a healthy mix of simple and complex sentence structures used with a high degree of accuracy. Complex structures are handled securely, as seen in sentences like 'Although it contains several spices, the level of heat can easily be adjusted to suit different tastes' and 'Some people assume that our cuisine is always extremely spicy, so butter chicken would be a good way to introduce them...'. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, and control over punctuation, tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement is strong throughout the entire response.
