Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to offer a famous cuisin from my home country in the upcoming international event.

I would love to serve a mustred leave green curry which is known as "sarson da saag" with makki di roti. This is a punjabi dish which contains leafy vegetables such as fenugreek, spinach and coriander. Also, it includes some traditional spices such as ginger, garlic and turmic even somtimes it is eaten with ghee and butter. Mostly people admire to eat it in winter season with carrot and raddish.

The reason why I want to include this popular dish is its flavour since international students not only get a chance to try this mouth-watering dish, but also they get to know about traditional and cultural food. I would be garteful if you could give me a chance to represent this popular food.

Looking forward to recieving your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Harpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The candidate has successfully covered all three bullet points required by the task. First, the writer clearly offers to make a popular dish by stating, 'I am writing this letter to offer a famous cuisin from my home country.' Second, the dish is adequately described as a mustard leaf green curry known as 'sarson da saag' along with 'makki di roti,' mentioning ingredients like fenugreek, spinach, coriander, and traditional spices. Third, the explanation for its inclusion is well-articulated, highlighting both its delicious flavour and the opportunity for international students to learn about traditional and cultural food. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriate for an informal request to an event organiser, fulfilling the task requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It opens with an appropriate salutation and statement of purpose, moves smoothly into describing the dish and explaining its relevance, and concludes with a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each main idea housed in its own distinct paragraph. Cohesive devices such as 'Also,' and 'The reason why I want to include this popular dish is...' are used effectively to connect ideas, though referencing is occasionally simplistic. Overall, the text flows naturally and the arrangement of information is coherent from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating specific cultural food terms such as 'sarson da saag,' 'makki di roti,' 'ghee,' and 'fenugreek.' There are some attempts at less common vocabulary and lexical chunks, such as 'mouth-watering dish' and 'prompt response.' However, there are a few notable spelling and typographical errors, including 'cuisin' instead of 'cuisine,' 'mustred' instead of 'mustard,' 'turmic' instead of 'turmeric,' 'somtimes,' 'mostly' instead of 'most,' 'raddish' instead of 'radish,' 'garteful' instead of 'grateful,' and 'recieving' instead of 'receiving.' While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the lexical score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'The reason why I want to include this popular dish is its flavour since international students not only get a chance to try this mouth-watering dish, but also they get to know about traditional and cultural food.' There are occasional grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'Mostly people admire to eat it,' where 'mostly' is misused for 'most people.' Punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally handled well, and errors do not impede the reader's understanding of the message.
