Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to offer you to make a famous dish from my country for the Food Gala event organized by your team on 28th October.

I am from Bulgaria and there are very few representative from my country in your team. Hence, I would like to offer you a very popular dish called Thama which would be ideal to be representation of Bulgaria.

Thama is made up of rice flour, millet and barley seeds. First you boil rice at 100 degree celcius, then add coriander, followed by adding some barley seeds with some spices from the country. This is very tangy as some tomatoes are also added to it.

Although there are many South American nations representatives who will be showcasing their dishes at this event, I do not see any Bulgarian dishes on the event's menu. Moreover, introducing this dish to numerous people from around the world would help us promote diverse food cuisine. Thus, I would like to have Thama on the menu for this event.

Thank you for consideration and looking forward to the event.

Your sincerely,

Alex Parker

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The candidate has fully satisfied all the requirements of the prompt by covering every bullet point clearly. The opening offers to make a popular dish from the candidate's home country, Bulgaria. The description of the dish is detailed, mentioning ingredients like rice flour, millet, barley seeds, coriander, and tomatoes. Furthermore, the explanation of why it should be included is soundly connected to the event context, pointing out the absence of Bulgarian dishes on the menu and the value of promoting diverse food cuisines. The tone of the letter is appropriately polite and semi-formal, maintaining the perspective of an international students' club member writing to an organiser named Luis. The purpose is clear from the beginning and sustained throughout the text.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and a natural progression of ideas from the opening proposal to the concluding sign-off. Paragraphing is utilised effectively, with each paragraph serving a distinct function such as introducing the purpose, describing the dish, and providing justification for its inclusion. Cohesive devices are deployed reasonably well, including transition markers like 'Hence', 'First', 'then', and 'Moreover'. While referencing is generally clear and straightforward, a few minor improvements in cohesive linking could elevate the text further, but the overall structure supports smooth reading and clear comprehension.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The lexical resource is generally adequate and handles the topic with sufficient precision to convey the intended meaning. The writer successfully incorporates relevant vocabulary associated with food and events, such as 'Food Gala event', 'representative', 'ingredients', and 'promote diverse food cuisine'. There are occasional slight inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'offer you to make' instead of 'offer to make' and 'ideal to be representation' instead of 'ideal representation', but these do not impede communication. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses with 'although', 'which', and conditional elements successfully. Grammatical control is fairly good, though a few errors persist, such as 'very few representative' (should be plural 'representatives') and 'Thank you for consideration' (missing article 'your consideration'). Punctuation is mostly accurate, and although minor errors occur, they rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences are clear and correct.
