Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am an active member of the International Students' Club. Since our event is based on the famous dishes globally, I would like to participate as well. I would be offering India's popular street food item named "Bhel".

Bhel includes mixture of all food pallates. It has puffed rice, chopped boiled potatos, finely chopped green chillies, onions and tomatoes. Some basic spices like salt, tumeric and red chilli powder. It will also have some tanginess with lemon juice. For crunchiness, it would have peanuts. For spicyness, there would be a green paste known as chutney that has corriander, mint, lemon and ginger with little amount of water. And finally, for some sweetness , it would have a tamarind-date chutney as well.

Bhel is considered as a very common street food which is loved by almost everyone. I think it should be included in our event as it is light on stomach and is affordable to poor people as well. I think it is a best way to repsent my countruy.

Let me know if you want to schedule a tasting for it. I would be happy to help.

Thank you,

Urja Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly offer to make a popular dish from India named "Bhel" in your opening paragraph. Following this, you vividly describe what the dish is by listing its key ingredients and the balance of tastes, such as"puffed rice", "tanginess with lemon juice", and the two types of chutney providing spice and sweetness. Finally, you adequately explain why it should be included in the event, noting that it is light, affordable, and represents your country well. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club organiser, and all parts of the prompt are addressed with relevant and well-developed ideas, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a clear overall organisation and logical progression. You use a standard, appropriate letter format with a correct greeting and sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate your introduction, the description of the dish, your reasons for its inclusion, and your closing offer. However, some of the cohesive devices and transitions between sentences are a bit repetitive, such as repeatedly starting sentences with "It has", "It will also have", and "For...". Despite this mechanical sequencing in the second paragraph, your meaning is clear throughout, and the overall progression is logical, placing this performance solidly at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the food item with some precision, using less common items and specific food terms such as "tanginess", "crunchiness", "corriander", and "tamarind-date chutney". There are, however, a few noticeable spelling and lexical errors, such as "pallates" instead of "palates", "potatos" instead of "potatoes", "tumeric" instead of "turmeric", "spicyness" instead of "spiciness", and "repsent my countruy" instead of "represent my country". Additionally, phrases like "light on stomach" lack standard collocation (it should be "light on the stomach"). Because these vocabulary and spelling errors do not impede communication, your lexical resource corresponds to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully expressing your ideas. For instance, you use dependent clauses effectively in sentences like "Since our event is based on the famous dishes globally, I would like to participate as well." While you attempt various structures, there are several grammatical and punctuation lapses, such as missing articles ("is a best way" instead of "is the best way"), punctuation spacing issues (e.g., "rice, chopped", "salt, tumeric"), and minor prepositional inaccuracies ("popular dish from your country" is fine, but "light on stomach" lacks an article). The majority of your simple sentences are error-free, and your complex structures are mostly clear, meaning these errors rarely impede communication and place you at Band 6.0.
