Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my interest in preparing my home country meal for an event which will be held in the club and I am also a member of an international students' club. I recently heard this news from my club members and would be delighted to take part in this exciting event.
Firstly, I am from India, and there is an excessive variety of food popular on different occasions. However, one well-known food is biryani which is very popular in India.
Secondly, biryani is cooked with rice and add some a spicy sauce, vegetables and chopped onions. Many people likes to eat non vegetarian biryani which is made with meat.
Finally, many people who belong to different countries and they like to eat rice. Therefore, they have a chance to eat different type cooked rice.
I would like to appreciate it if you could give me permission to cook both types of vegetarian biryani as well as non- vegetarian. Therefore, everyone can try it.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Kind regards,
Jass.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You have addressed all parts of the task successfully. You clearly offered to make a dish from your country, described what the dish is (biryani, made with rice, spices, vegetables, and meat), and explained why it should be included (because people from different countries like rice and everyone can try both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options). The purpose of the letter is clear, and your tone is polite and appropriate for an informal request to a club organiser. However, some of your supporting ideas are a bit brief and repetitive, such as the point about people liking rice. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on why biryani specifically represents your culture and why it would be a hit at an international food event. Overall, your communication of the required information is effective and achieves the purpose well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter has a clear overall structure with an appropriate opening and sign-off. You made an attempt to sequence your ideas logically using linking words like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally'. However, the use of these markers feels a bit mechanical and repetitive, and some paragraphs are overly short, which disrupts the natural flow of the letter. For example, your final body paragraph consists of just one short sentence. Paragraphing in letters should group related ideas together more smoothly. Additionally, referencing is occasionally awkward, such as in the sentence 'many people who belong to different countries and they like to eat rice', where the extra 'and' creates a grammatical and cohesive hiccup. With more natural transitional phrases and better-developed paragraphs, your cohesion would improve significantly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You have used an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully communicating everyday topics related to food and cooking. Words like 'express my interest', 'delighted', 'excessive variety', and 'non-vegetarian' show that you have a functional command of English. However, your vocabulary choice is sometimes basic or imprecise. For instance, you wrote 'add some a spicy sauce', which contains an article error and simple phrasing. Another example is 'different type cooked rice', which lacks necessary prepositions and precision. There are also occasional word choice lapses, such as 'heard this news' instead of 'heard about this event'. To achieve a higher band score, you should try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary and less common lexical items related to cuisine and cultural events, while maintaining accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You have demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing to express my interest in preparing my home country meal for an event which will be held in the club'. While you manage some longer sentences successfully, there are several grammatical errors and awkward constructions throughout the text. For example, 'add some a spicy sauce' contains a double article error. Another error is 'Many people likes to eat', where there is a subject-verb agreement mistake ('people likes'). Additionally, 'I would like to appreciate it if you could' is an unnatural collocation; the standard polite form is 'I would appreciate it if you could'. Despite these errors, your meaning remains clear and they do not impede communication. Practising complex structures and checking your work for basic agreement and prepositions will help raise your grammar score.
