Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to express my interest in the upcoming food event organized by the international students club.I would love to participat and offe to make a popular dish from my country pakistian.

This dish i would like to prepare is called biryani. It is a very famous rice dish cooked with chicken, spices, yogurt and vegetables. It is colourful aromatic and slightly spicy. It is usually served with raita wich is a yogurt dip and it is loved by everyone in my countruy.

I think it should be included in the event for two reason.Firstly, it represents the rich culture of pakistan and most international students have never tried authentic pakistani food.Secondly,it is easy to serve to a large number of people and is suitable for both lunch and dinner.I am sure everyone will enjoy it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The candidate addresses all three bullet points required in the task prompt: offering to make a popular dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. You successfully state your intention to make 'biryani' and provide relevant supporting reasons, such as its cultural representation and suitability for large crowds. However, there is a penalty to consider regarding the length requirement. The text contains 134 words, which falls short of the 150-word minimum specified for General Training Writing Task 1. As a result, the development of ideas is slightly curtailed and the task is only partially fulfilled in terms of expected length. Consequently, this impacts the overall task achievement score, placing it at a Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a clear, logical structure with appropriate paragraphing for an informal correspondence. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction establishes the purpose of writing, the second paragraph describes the dish, and the final paragraph provides reasons for its inclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' in the final paragraph, which help structure your arguments clearly. However, there are minor cohesion and punctuation flaws throughout the text, such as missing spaces after punctuation marks (e.g., 'club.I would', 'chicken, spices'). Despite these mechanical errors, the overarching progression of ideas is easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message. You use some relevant food-related and descriptive terms such as 'aromatic', 'spicy', and 'yogurt dip'. However, the lexical range is somewhat limited, and there are several spelling and typographical errors, such as 'participat' instead of participate, 'offe' instead of offer, 'pakistian' instead of Pakistan, 'wich' instead of which, and 'countruy' instead of country. These errors reflect basic spelling inaccuracies rather than advanced lexical control. While communication is not impeded, the frequent spelling slips prevent the vocabulary score from reaching higher bands, earning a solid Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing to express my interest...' and 'It is a very famous rice dish cooked with chicken...'. There are several grammatical structures attempted correctly, including relative clauses ('...wich is a yogurt dip and it is loved by...'). However, you make consistent punctuation and capitalisation errors, such as failing to capitalise 'pakistan' and omitting spaces after commas and periods. Furthermore, there are minor slips in verb forms and agreement ('offe' instead of offered or offer). Because your grammar does not heavily obscure meaning and shows a reasonable mix of structures, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
