Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing today to offer to prepare a famous dish from Pakistani cuisine for the upcoming food event. The dish is called Biryani, which I am sure you have already heard of.
It is made of rice, a meat of choice and a blend of flavorful spices. I am going to follow my mother's recipe that all of my family loves. The preferred meat will be chicken. Preparation includes layering rice and seasoned chicken on top of each other to give it a balanced taste. I can also make a sample for you to taste beforehand.
I think the appropriate reason for its inclusion in the event is that I want club members from multiple cultures to try Pakistani cuisine. I can assure you that everyone will love it. Also, it is very easy to prepare and serve in large portions.
Please let me know the number of persons and other details so I can make necessary arrangements.
Looking forward to your response.
Kind Regards,
Zaaibo

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response fully satisfies all requirements of the prompt by addressing every bullet point effectively. You successfully offer to make a popular dish from your country by stating, 'I am writing today to offer to prepare a famous dish from Pakistani cuisine.' You also vividly describe what the dish is, mentioning key ingredients such as 'rice, a meat of choice and a blend of flavorful spices' and explaining the preparation method. Finally, you explain why it should be included, noting that you want 'club members from multiple cultures to try Pakistani cuisine' and that it is 'very easy to prepare and serve in large portions.' The tone is entirely appropriate for a semi-formal letter to an event organiser. Ideas are well-developed and clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are grouped into appropriate paragraphs, starting with an introductory purpose, moving into the description of the dish, explaining the reasons for its inclusion, and closing with logistical questions and a sign-off. Cohesive devices are used naturally and appropriately, such as 'which I am sure you have already heard of' and 'Also, it is very easy to prepare.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively, ensuring that each new point gets its own space, which makes the letter very easy to read and follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to a food-related topic. Phrases such as 'Pakistani cuisine', 'upcoming food event', 'blend of flavorful spices', and 'balanced taste' show a good command of lexical items. There are also nice attempts at less common vocabulary used with reasonable accuracy. Word choices are precise, and spelling is entirely accurate. While there could be a few more sophisticated idioms or higher-level academic collocations, the vocabulary used is entirely adequate and appropriate for achieving a high band in a general task letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The response features a good variety of sentence structures, mixing simple and complex forms seamlessly. You effectively use relative clauses and infinitive phrases, such as 'which I am sure you have already heard of' and 'to give it a balanced taste.' The majority of your sentences are error-free, demonstrating a strong control of grammar and punctuation. There are only very occasional minor awkwardnesses, but nothing that impedes communication or causes difficulty for the reader. Verb tenses are handled correctly across present, past, and future references.
