Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to you about preparing a dish for the upcoming popular food event on the 12th of March at our college.

I am always fascinated by cooking, so I really want to cook traditional Chinese cuisine for this event, and my dish will be chicken chili with egg fried rice.

This dish will be full of traditional spices, and as the name suggests, it will be a bit spicy. The chicken will be served as small balls with gravy, and the rice will be brown and full of vegetables and egg crumbs.

This dish will give a great essence of Chinese food, and the aroma will help the people to buy more and more of this and as discussed I will be contributing the whole profit to the club wellbeing.

Hope to get a positive response from your side.

Yours sincerely,

Sakshi Abbott

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student has successfully covered all bullet points required by the task: offering to make a dish (traditional Chinese cuisine), describing it (chicken chili with egg fried rice with spices and gravy), and explaining why it should be included (gives a great essence of Chinese food and profits go to the club). The tone is appropriately semi-formal for a letter to an event organiser. However, the Length Check indicates that the response contains only 147 words, failing to meet the minimum requirement of 150 words. In accordance with the marking guidelines, a penalty must be applied for under-length, bringing this criterion down to a 5.5 despite the good coverage of task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is coherent and easy to follow. The student uses a clear paragraphing structure with an appropriate opening and closing. Ideas logically progress from introducing the reason for writing to describing the dish and finally explaining its contribution to the club. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'and as the name suggests' and 'and as discussed'. Paragraph breaks are managed reasonably well, separating the introduction, body details, and conclusion. While referencing is generally clear, the heavy reliance on coordinating conjunctions like 'and' to link clauses somewhat limits the sophistication of cohesion, placing this response securely at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'upcoming', 'fascinated', 'traditional cuisine', 'aroma', and 'contribution'. There are some successful collocation attempts like 'traditional Chinese cuisine' and 'positive response'. However, some word choices are a bit awkward or colloquial, such as calling the chicken pieces 'small balls' and stating that the aroma will 'help the people to buy more and more of this'. Spelling and word-choice errors do not impede communication, but the vocabulary remains somewhat standard and lacks the flexibility and precision of a higher band. Therefore, a score of 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences using connectives like 'so', 'and', and 'as'. Grammatical control is generally decent; structures such as 'I am always fascinated by cooking, so I really want to cook...' and 'This dish will give a great essence of Chinese food' are structurally sound and error-free. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, including appropriate greetings and sign-offs. Although there are no major grammatical errors that impede communication, the structural range is somewhat limited and repetitive in its reliance on compound structures joined by 'and', which prevents it from reaching a Band 7.0.
