Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sam,

I am writing to offer my help with the upcoming international food event. I would be delighted to prepare a popular dish from my country, India called butter chicken.

Butter chicken is a traditional Indian dish made with tender pieces of chicken cooked in a rich, creamy tamato based suace. It is usually flavoured with spices such as garam masala, cumin and coriander. It is commonly served with naan bread or rice making it filling and enjoyable meal.

I believe this dish would be an excellent addition to the event because it is one of the most popular Indain dishes and is enjoyed by people in many countries. Moreover, its mild and creamy flavour makes is suitable for people who may not be like to spicy food. I would also be happy to prepare a vegetarain alternqative so that more students can enjoy Indain cuuisine.

Please let me know if you would like to prepare this dish and how many people I should cater for.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfylly,

Darshit

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You successfully offer to make a popular dish from your country by stating, 'I would be delighted to prepare a popular dish from my country, India called butter chicken.' You describe the dish clearly by explaining its ingredients and how it is served, noting that it is made with 'tender pieces of chicken cooked in a rich, creamy tamato based suace' and flavoured with various spices. Furthermore, you effectively explain why it should be included by highlighting its universal popularity and suitability for people who dislike spicy food, while also offering a vegetarian alternative. All parts of the task are well covered with clear and relevant supporting details. Minor slips in addressing the recipient's name (starting with 'Dear Sam' instead of 'Dear Luis' as requested) are noted, but the overall communicative purpose is fully achieved.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You start with a polite opening and a clear statement of purpose in the first paragraph. The second paragraph provides a detailed description of the dish, and the third paragraph successfully shifts to explaining why the dish should be included in the event. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the letter. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' are used effectively to link ideas and extend your arguments. Referencing is generally clear, and the transition between offering the dish, describing it, and giving reasons for its inclusion feels natural and easy to follow. A few more cohesive phrases could have added extra polish, but overall the structure is solid and well-managed.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for this task with some good attempts at less common items, such as 'traditional Indian dish', 'creamy tomato-based sauce', and 'vegetarian alternative'. However, there are a few spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'tamato' instead of 'tomato', 'suace' instead of 'sauce', 'Indain' instead of 'Indian', 'alternqative' instead of 'alternative', and the phrase 'may not be like to spicy food' which contains a grammatical and lexical inaccuracy. Additionally, you addressed the letter to 'Sam' despite the prompt asking to write to 'Luis', and signed off as 'faithfylly' instead of 'faithfully'. Despite these slips, your vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You make use of a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative and subordinate clauses ('I believe this dish would be an excellent addition to the event because it is one of the most popular Indian dishes...'). There are several error-free sentences, and your punctuation is generally quite good. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and typos that prevent a higher band, such as 'India called butter chicken' (missing punctuation or preposition), 'making it filling and enjoyable meal' (missing article 'a'), and 'may not be like to spicy food' (incorrect verb form). The sign-off also contains a spelling error ('faithfylly'). Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the overall grammatical control is adequate for a solid intermediate level.
