Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to request you to make one of the best dish which is very famous in my nation. I am very sure that this dish will take many opportunites for our club.

First of all, I am Ramandeep Kaur, a member of an International student's club. Many people know about it but overseas individuals do not know about it, so I would appreciate it if you could add this dish in upcoming event.

Moreover, The name of this famous dish is shahi paneer. It is very delicious in taste and easy to make it. I know how to make it, also I can help new chefs to make it. Mainly, we need to add different kinds of spices, fresh paneer and cream. After making, we need coriander to garnish to make more attactive.

Therefore, it would be very beneficial for us due to many reasons. With this, our club can get more popularity and this dish could help to increase our sales. Also, we can get good profit.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Ramandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You offer to make a dish, introduce yourself as a club member, describe the dish as 'shahi paneer' detailing its ingredients like fresh paneer, spices, and cream, and explain why it should be included to boost club popularity and sales. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive in places, such as reiterating that the dish is famous and beneficial. While the tone is appropriately friendly and polite, the introduction contains a slightly unnatural framing ('request you to make one of the best dish'). Overall, all parts of the task are addressed, earning a solid Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending. Paragraphing is used to separate different points, such as the introduction, the dish description, and the benefits to the club. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition 'First of all, I am Ramandeep Kaur' feels awkward given that you already introduced yourself as a club member in the previous sentence. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as 'Many people know about it but overseas individuals do not know about it' where the pronoun antecedent is slightly repetitive. These minor cohesion issues place the response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully incorporating specific food-related terms such as 'spices', 'fresh paneer', 'cream', and 'coriander to garnish'. There are, however, noticeable word-choice inaccuracies and unnatural phrasing, such as 'one of the best dish' (should be plural 'dishes'), 'delicious in taste' (redundant), and 'attactive' (spelling error). While you attempt less common vocabulary items like 'opportunity', 'popularity', and 'beneficial', errors in collocation and form prevent the score from reaching a higher band. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey your message clearly, making a Band 5.5 appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'I would appreciate it if you could add this dish in upcoming event.' There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including article omissions ('in upcoming event' should be 'in the upcoming event'), missing prepositions, and awkward infinitives ('easy to make it' should be 'easy to make'). Despite these frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, as the reader can easily follow the intended meaning. This performance aligns well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.
