Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well.

I am Jessica, one of the member of international Student’s Club and I heard that you are organizing an event to celebrate popular food from around the world.

I am writing to you to offer to make a well known dish in our country which is in the Philippines. I would love to share to everyone one of our delicacies, we called it “Pancit Bihon”. We usually prepare this every celebration we have like birthday party or any occasion we gather in our family.

The dish is made of rice noodles, chicken or pork, vegetables like green beans, carrots, and cabbage, seasoned with soy sauce and little pepper to taste. I recommended this not only because of the great taste but also it is really nutritious. Moreover, I believe that this must be included in the event because member of the club will enjoy it.

I hope for your consideration and positive response on this offer.

Yours Faithfully,

Jessica

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all parts of the prompt by offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. Your tone is appropriately polite and friendly for a letter to a club organiser. For instance, you clearly introduce your purpose by stating, 'I am writing to you to offer to make a well known dish in our country.' You also provide a solid description of 'Pancit Bihon' by listing its ingredients and explain its suitability through its nutritional value and appeal. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or simplistic, such as your explanation that members will enjoy it because of great taste, which prevents the response from reaching a higher level. To push further into top bands, you would need to fully extend and elaborate on your ideas with more depth and specific supporting details about the event.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from your introduction to your offer, description, and concluding hope for a response. You use basic paragraphing effectively to separate your main points, and employ standard conventions such as starting with 'Dear Luis,' and ending with 'Yours Faithfully, Jessica'. However, your use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical or basic. For example, transitioning between sentences relies heavily on simple connectors like 'Moreover' rather than a smoother flow of ideas. Additionally, referencing could be clearer, as seen in phrases like 'we called it', which slightly disrupts the cohesion. To achieve a higher band, you would need to use cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that referencing within and between sentences is completely seamless and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using everyday terms to communicate your ideas clearly. You make attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'delicacies' and 'nutritious', which shows an ambition to expand your lexical range. However, there are noticeable word choice, word form, and spelling errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, you write 'one of the member' instead of 'members', and state 'a well known dish in our country which is in the Philippines', which is slightly unnatural phrasing. Furthermore, phrases like 'we called it' instead of 'which we call' show occasional inaccuracies. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent you from achieving a higher band. To improve, you should focus on precision in word choice, natural collocations, and checking grammatical forms of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms throughout your letter, demonstrating an ability to combine clauses using relative pronouns, such as '...an event to celebrate popular food from around the world' and '...a dish in our country which is in the Philippines.' However, there are several errors in grammar and punctuation that persist. For example, you write 'every celebration we have like birthday party or any occasion we gather in our family', which lacks necessary prepositions and articles. You also include a comma splice in the sentence 'I would love to share to everyone one of our delicacies, we called it “Pancit Bihon”'. While these errors rarely impede communication, they show that your control over complex structures is not yet fully consistent. To reach a higher level, you need to produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences and demonstrate better control over prepositions and punctuation.
