Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to express my interest in participating in the upcoming event of celebrating the famous food from all over the world.

I would like to offer a very special dish from my country which would be prepared live for the outstanding experience. This dish is called "jalebi" which is sweet and crispy spiral shaped product and often served warm with a small portion of sugar syrup.

This dish is greatly consumed by Indian people especially during the festivals. Some people also like to prepare this amazing dish on their own. Being the symbol of positivity and prosperity, this dish is almost cherished by every single individual.

Moreover, the process of making this dish is very interesting and simple. People can easily learn how to make it. Therefore, I would like to prepare this dish in this wonderful event.

Please let me know if this idea suits to you. I will be looking forward to hear from you.

Best regards,

Gurpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points of the prompt, positioning the letter appropriately for Luis, the event organiser. You clearly offer to make a popular dish from your country, describe 'jalebi' as a sweet and crispy spiral-shaped product, and explain why it should be included due to its cultural significance and simple preparation process. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are extended and supported well, though the explanation of why it should be included borders slightly on over-generalisation when stating it is 'almost cherished by every single individual.' To move towards higher bands, you could develop your descriptions with even more vivid, specific details about the dish's preparation and cultural role rather than relying on general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the letter. The layout follows standard informal letter conventions, starting with an appropriate greeting to Luis and ending with a clear sign-off. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'This dish', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore', to connect your ideas. Paragraphing is used logically and sufficiently, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the request—offering the dish, describing it, explaining its significance, and concluding. To achieve an even higher level of cohesion, you could use a wider variety of referencing words and advanced cohesive phrases to make the transitions between sentences feel completely natural and seamless rather than slightly mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range for some flexibility and precision. You attempt to use less common vocabulary items such as 'positivity and prosperity' and 'outstanding experience'. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as referring to jalebi as a 'product' rather than a 'delicacy' or 'sweet', and stating that the dish is 'greatly consumed' rather than 'widely enjoyed'. Spelling is generally accurate, and these minor word choice errors do not impede communication. To reach the next band, aim to incorporate more natural collocations and sophisticated vocabulary suited to describing food and cultural events.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses successfully, such as 'which would be prepared live' and 'People can easily learn how to make it.' There are a few errors in grammar and punctuation, such as the missing comma before the non-defining relative clause in 'This dish is called "jalebi" which is...' and the awkward prepositional phrasing in 'suits to you' instead of 'suits you' or 'works for you'. However, these errors persist alongside frequent error-free sentences and do not impede communication. To elevate your grammar score, ensure greater precision in verb patterns and prepositions, and incorporate a wider range of complex grammatical structures with consistent accuracy.
