Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

How are you? I am writing to inform you about my interest to participate at our forthcoming event to celebrate famous global food.

I would like to contribute towards the occasion, by making a Nigerian delicacy. This dish is called Egusi soup and pounded yam. It is made from mellon seeds, which are ground to powder, then fried with palm oil and garnished with proteins such as stock fish, fresh fish, goat meat and some times antelope meat. Pumpkin leaves are added in a moderate quantity as we like having vegetables in nearly all our meals. The soup is usually eaten with pounded yam, the yam is boiled till it becomes very soft, then pounded to form a thick paste with a mortar and a pistle.

Our club has a great number of Africans, mostly Nigerians, who have not had the opportunity to eat their native delicacies for a while, this would be highly appreciated by them. Also it creates a means for club memebers of various nationalities to learn about our traditional food.

I look forward to a favourable feedback from you.

Best wishes,

Izere

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

You successfully covered all parts of the task prompt in a well-developed and appropriate manner. You clearly offered to make a specific Nigerian delicacy, described both the ingredients and preparation methods in great detail, and provided strong justifications for why the dish should be included in the event, such as catering to the club's Nigerian members and educating others. Your ideas are thoroughly extended, demonstrating a strong understanding of how to properly fulfill a general correspondence task. To reach an even higher standard, you could ensure that every minor detail of the context is utilized seamlessly to maintain maximum relevance and depth throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter displays a clear logical organization and progression from your opening greeting through to your concluding remarks. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your introduction, the description of the dish, your justifications, and your sign-off. You make good use of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through your thoughts, such as transitional phrases like 'I would like to contribute towards the occasion' and 'Also it creates a means'. To improve further and achieve an even higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of advanced cohesive features and ensure that referencing remains completely unambiguous throughout all paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You demonstrated a sufficient lexical range for the task, successfully employing less common vocabulary and cultural food terms such as 'delicacy', 'garnished', and 'traditional food'. Your word choices generally allow for clear communication and show an awareness of appropriate style. However, there are a few minor spelling and word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'mellon' instead of 'melon', 'memebers' instead of 'members', and the slight misuse in 'inform you about my interest to participate at' where 'in' or 'take part in' would be more natural. Refining these minor slips will help elevate your lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You successfully utilized a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and participial phrases, while maintaining good control over punctuation and basic structures. Your writing features several error-free sentences, which allowed your message to be communicated clearly without impediment. However, there are a few lingering structural and punctuation errors, notably a comma splice in the third paragraph ('for a while, this would be highly appreciated') and occasional prepositional or article choices. To move towards higher bands, focus on increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences and polishing your control over clausal boundaries.
