Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this to express my excitement for the upcoming International food festival and to offer my support to preparing a famous cuisine from my country.

I would like to prepare Butter chicken that is one of the culinary specialties in the northern region of country. It consists of tender boneless marinated chicken pieces cooked with rich tomato sauce infused with aromatic spices, butter and fresh cream. Traditionally, it is served with wheat tortilla or steamed rice.

I am confident that the dish will be a fantastic addition to the festival. As it represents the traditional and cultural diversity. Moreover, Toronto has a lot of north Indian people residing here. In addition to this, the mild spicy profile will appeal to wide variety of palates.

Please let me know if there are any specific guidelines for cooking and labelling. I look forward to contributing to a successful event.

Warm Regards,

Amitoz Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task prompt, adopting an appropriate semi-formal tone for a letter to an event organiser. The writer clearly offers to make a popular dish ('Butter chicken'), provides a vivid and accurate description of what the dish is, and explains its inclusion based on cultural diversity, local demographics ('Toronto has a lot of north Indian people'), and flavour profile. The purpose is clear throughout the text, and the ideas are extended and supported effectively. To reach an even higher level, the ideas could be developed with slightly more elaboration, ensuring that every bullet point is explored with maximum depth and nuance, avoiding any tendency to over-generalise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured sensibly into appropriate paragraphs, moving smoothly from the initial offer to the description of the dish, the justification for its inclusion, and finally the concluding questions and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition to this', and referencing words are used with good flexibility to guide the reader through the text. While the paragraphing and flow are well managed, minor improvements in linking certain sentences could make the progression even more seamless and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

The writer employs a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, demonstrating a good awareness of style suitable for a food-related letter. Less common lexical items are used appropriately, such as 'culinary specialties', 'marinated chicken pieces', 'aromatic spices', and 'palates'. There are occasional minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward choices, such as writing 'support to preparing' instead of 'support in preparing' and missing an article before 'country' in the phrase 'from my country'. However, the vocabulary is varied enough to convey precise meanings clearly and effectively without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response features a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, showing general control over grammar and punctuation. Frequent error-free sentences are present, such as 'It consists of tender boneless marinated chicken pieces cooked with rich tomato sauce...' and 'Please let me know if there are any specific guidelines for cooking and labelling.' A few minor errors persist, notably a prepositional oversight in 'support to preparing' and a minor fragment or punctuation slip in the phrasing 'As it represents the traditional and cultural diversity.' Despite these occasional lapses, grammar and punctuation do not interfere with understanding.
