Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that I am planning to make my country dish at an event that is organised on 5th October at the college campus.

There are a number of popular dishes throughout the country. I would be grateful if you could give me permission to make my country dish. This dish is known as a paratha, which is made from flour, spices, and vegetables. Certain people prefer chutney with it.

Up to the present time, the modern generation prefers only junk food; consequently, I wanted to taste a real, authentic dish of my country. In addition, it is very light and healthy for the diet, and it is ready in 5 minutes. I will ensure that individuals enjoy this cuisine.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Please let me know if you need any further information.

Yours faithfully,

Almas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your letter covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You successfully offer to make a dish, describe it as a paratha made from flour, spices, and vegetables, and explain why it should be included by highlighting that it is healthy and quick to prepare. However, some parts of your response are under-developed or slightly unclear, such as the sentence 'I wanted to taste a real, authentic dish of my country,' which creates some confusion since you are the one preparing the food for others rather than tasting it. To reach a higher level, every bullet point must be fully extended with clear, logical support and crystal-clear intent throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, using an appropriate salutation and sign-off. You organise your thoughts into distinct paragraphs covering different aspects of the prompt. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty in its referencing. For example, the transition from discussing the dish to explaining why it should be included feels abrupt, and expressions like 'Up to the present time' feel a bit heavy and unnatural for an informal student club letter. To improve, ensure that cohesive devices connect your ideas more smoothly and naturally without drawing unnecessary attention to themselves.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'authentic', 'consideration', and 'cuisine'. However, there are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies that prevent a higher score. For instance, using 'my country dish' instead of 'a traditional dish from my country' or 'my national dish', and the phrasing 'I wanted to taste' instead of 'I wanted guests to taste', show limitations in precision. Spelling is generally accurate, but upgrading your lexical choices with more natural collocations would significantly enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a solid foundation in English grammar. Sentences like 'I would be grateful if you could give me permission...' and 'Please let me know if you need any further information' are well-controlled. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'an event that is organised on 5th October' (where 'that is being organised' or 'taking place' would be more appropriate) and minor preposition or article slips. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and you successfully incorporate part of the next band's requirements by demonstrating good control over several multi-clause structures.
