Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I'm writing this because I want to make a very famous dish from Pakistan for our upcoming club event. I know everyone from our club is going to bring some special dish that's why I would like to being something as well.

The dish I want to offer is called Biryani, it's cooked from rise and meat. We can use chicken, beaf or mutton for this. As our club members like to eat chicken, that's why I would like to make Chicken Biryani. When I was in Pakistan, I always eat this on every other day.

I've made this last month when I invited Mike and some other club members in my room. They tried this and liked so much. Mike, specially asked me to bring this in the event, that's why I offer you to include this dish in the event.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Umer Nazeer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully addressed all parts of the letter requirements, opening with a polite greeting and covering the three main bullet points: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. Your purpose is clear from the beginning. However, while you offered to make Biryani and explained that it is cooked from rice and meat, this description remains somewhat basic and underdeveloped. Similarly, the explanation for why it should be included relies heavily on personal anecdote rather than fully expanding on its broad appeal to the wider club. To reach a higher level, you would need to extend and support your ideas with more thorough details about the flavours and why the whole club would enjoy it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter shows a clear overall arrangement with logical paragraphing that separates your introduction, the dish description, the personal anecdote, and your sign-off. You use basic cohesive devices to connect your thoughts, such as 'When I was in Pakistan' and 'that's why'. However, some of your referencing and logical transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as repeatedly using 'that's why'. To improve, you can employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive phrases and ensure that referencing pronouns like 'this' clearly refer back to the intended nouns without relying on repetitive sentence patterns.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrated an adequate vocabulary range to complete the task successfully, using familiar terms related to food and cooking like 'dish', 'meat', and 'chicken'. You attempted some less common vocabulary items, but this resulted in a few word-choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as writing 'being' instead of 'bring', 'rise' instead of 'rice', and 'beaf' instead of 'beef'. Fortunately, these errors do not impede communication, and the reader can easily understand your message. To achieve a higher score, you should work on precise spelling and incorporating more sophisticated lexical items and collocations naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout your letter, such as 'I know everyone from our club is going to bring some special dish that's why I would like to bring something as well.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including run-on sentence structures like comma splices ('The dish I want to offer is called Biryani, it's cooked from rise and meat') and minor verb tense inconsistencies. However, these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure your overall meaning. To progress further, you need to exercise greater control over complex sentence punctuation and ensure that grammatical structures are entirely accurate.
