Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my willingness regarding the food event. I would like to offer a suggestion to include a very popular dish of my country.

Firstly, I would like to mention that it is an authentic traditional dish of my country named as Lemon Rice. The dish is very rich in protein and full of nutritious. The dish has several essential benefits itself on the top of that it takes very less time and efforts to make.

Furthermore, I would like add that this dish would be a good option to inculde in the food list because of its immense benefits the plus point is that it is very much beneficial for the gut health. I would request you to introduce such kind of healthy dish to the members of the events.

I would be grateful if you could draw you attention on my offer soon. I am hoping to get a positive response from you.

Yours Faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, as you manage to offer to make a popular dish, describe it as Lemon Rice, and explain why it should be included due to its health benefits and quick preparation. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While you clearly introduce the dish and mention its nutritional value, the explanation of why it should be included relies slightly on repetitive points about gut health rather than extending the ideas into a broader discussion of how it would enhance the cultural experience of the international club event. To move to a higher level, you should ensure that all bullet points are elaborated with equal depth and distinct supporting details, providing a more rounded and fully explored argument throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established from the beginning, and you use standard paragraphing to separate your main points about the dish and its benefits. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty, such as in the repetitive transitional phrases used at the start of paragraphs like 'Firstly, I would like to mention' and 'Furthermore, I would like add'. Referencing and logical progression could also be smoother, as the transition between discussing the nutritional benefits and requesting the introduction of the dish feels a bit abrupt. To achieve a higher score, you should employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices to link your sentences and paragraphs seamlessly without relying on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'authentic traditional dish', 'rich in protein', and 'gut health'. Nevertheless, there are notable word choice, word form, and collocation errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'full of nutritious' instead of 'full of nutrients', 'takes very less time and efforts' instead of 'takes very little time and effort', and 'draw you attention' instead of 'draw your attention'. Additionally, the salutation 'Dear Mr. Luis,' is slightly unnatural since the prompt addresses him simply as Luis. To improve your lexical score, you need to use less common vocabulary with greater precision, paying closer attention to word forms and natural collocations to ensure accurate expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional and relative clauses like 'I would be grateful if you could draw your attention on my offer soon.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the letter, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical slips include the missing prepositional control in 'draw your attention on' (instead of 'to'), the omission of 'to' in 'would like add', and a missing article in 'such kind of healthy dish'. To reach the next band, you need to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences while maintaining a good control of your complex sentence structures, ensuring that minor slips in prepositions and verb complements are minimized.
