Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing to take part in the international food event and want to prepare Indian dish. I would be happy to make doas with sambar for this occasion.
Dosa is traditonal south indian dish which is served with samabr and different types of chutney. There is a filling of boiled mashed potatos and chopped vegetables with spices, these ingridients mixed together and ready for the filling in the dosa. Sambar is made form vegetabels, cooked wuth spices in it.
I beleive dosa sambar is the best choice for this event because it is one of the most popular dish in India which is enjoyed by different ages. In addition, it not only has taste but also good for the health. Students form the different conutries will enjoy its distinctive taste and its richness.
Please let me know if you would like me to prepare this dish. I would be pleased to contribute to the event.
Yours sincerely,
John.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You successfully offer to make a popular dish from your country by stating, 'I would be happy to make doas with sambar,' describe what the dish is by mentioning the filling of 'boiled mashed potatos and chopped vegetables,' and explain why it should be included by noting that 'it is one of the most popular dish in India which is enjoyed by different ages' and is 'good for the health.' While your position is clear and all parts of the prompt are addressed, some ideas, such as the nutritional benefits, remain somewhat generalised rather than fully extended. To reach the highest band levels, you would need to develop each point with more specific elaboration, explaining more deeply how the dish's ingredients and cultural significance contribute to the international event.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You adopt an appropriate semi-formal tone starting with 'Dear Luis,' and ending with 'Yours sincerely, John.' The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with the first introducing the purpose of the letter, the second describing the dish, the third explaining why it should be included, and the final paragraph providing a polite closing. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'In addition' and referencing words like 'its distinctive taste,' though cohesive management can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical. To move higher, you could integrate a wider variety of cohesive ties more flexibly to ensure the transitions between your descriptive details and justifications flow even more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your lexical range is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message effectively. You make appropriate attempts at less common vocabulary related to food and culture, such as 'distinctive taste,' 'mashed potatos,' and 'ingredients.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent you from achieving a higher mark, including 'doas' (dosas), 'traditonal' (traditional), 'samabr' (sambar), 'potatos' (potatoes), 'ingridients' (ingredients), 'form' (from), 'wuth' (with), 'beleive' (believe), 'conutries' (countries), and treating 'dish' as plural/singular inconsistently ('one of the most popular dish'). These lexical and spelling inaccuracies occasionally cause minor distractions, though communication remains clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms in your letter, such as relative clauses ('which is served with samabr') and subordinate clauses ('because it is one of the most popular dish'). There are some errors in grammar, agreement, and articles throughout the text, for example omitting articles ('want to prepare Indian dish' instead of 'an Indian dish'), errors in prepositions ('made form vegetabels' instead of 'made from vegetables'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('Students form the different conutries will enjoy'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and you maintain reasonable control over basic sentence patterns. To achieve a higher score, you need to increase your variety of error-free complex structures and eliminate basic grammatical slips.
