Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

As a member of International Student club and on behalf of myself and the entire club I am very thankful to you for organising such an event. This event is going to bring us all as International students together and make us feel like home. It would also help us understand the culture and dishes of other countries and get to know more about them.

I would like to make an offer of preparing a popular dish in our country. The Name of the dish is Butter Chicken.

From the name itself we can think about the dish as chicken with buttery taste and aroma well, it is a very small part of buttery chicken. The dish happens to be a rich and creamy textured gravy with tender chicken boneless pieces an is prepared as per the spice level a individual.

It should be included in the event as it is consumed all over the country and it goes well with almost everything. You can have it with rice, Naan, Salad, Noodles, Pasta and so on. And the best part as I mentioned earlier it could be prepped with the spice level of an individual. It can be sweet or spicy. So I would want people to try this dish .

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your response successfully addresses all parts of the task by offering to make Butter Chicken, describing its rich, creamy texture and tender boneless pieces, and explaining why it should be included due to its universal appeal and customisable spice levels. Your tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal for a club communication. However, while all three bullet points are covered, some ideas tend to generalise rather than being fully extended. For instance, the explanation of why the dish goes with everything could be supported by more specific details about club members' preferences. You present a clear purpose throughout the letter, which allows you to comfortably meet the criteria for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from greeting the organiser, to offering the dish, describing it, and finally explaining its suitability for the event. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct points, such as the introduction, the dish description, and the reasons for inclusion. Cohesive devices are generally present, though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'and' to link clauses. Furthermore, the closing sign-off is appropriately positioned. To reach a higher level, you could improve the flow between sentences by using a wider variety of referencing pronouns and more sophisticated transition markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating thematic items related to food and cooking, such as 'aroma', 'rich and creamy textured gravy', and 'tender chicken boneless pieces'. There are some successful attempts at less common vocabulary, but also noticeable word choice and collocation slips, such as 'make an offer of preparing' instead of 'offer to prepare', and 'spice level of an individual' rather than 'level of spiciness'. Spelling is generally accurate, but minor lexical inaccuracies prevent the vocabulary from achieving a higher degree of precision and naturalness. Continuing to expand your repertoire of functional collocations will help elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional ideas reasonably well across the letter. There are several error-free sentences, such as your opening statement regarding the event's benefits. However, you make some grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including article omissions ('as International students' instead of 'as international students', 'a individual' instead of 'an individual'), missing hyphens ('boneless pieces'), and awkward phrasing like 'feel like home'. These errors do not impede communication, meaning the reader can easily follow your intended meaning, but they do persist and prevent the grammar from reaching higher bands.
