Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to offer my help with the international food event organized by the club. I would be delighted to prepare a popular dish from my country, India called vegetable biryani.

vegetable biryani is traditional Indian rice dish made with basmati rice, vegetable and a mixture of aromatic spices and variety of vegetables. It is usually served with yoghurt or fresh salad. This dish is both delicious and filling, and it can easily be prepared in large quantities. for an event like this.

I believe this dish should be include in this event because it is one of the famous dish of India and represents the country's rich food culture. Moreover, it is suitable for vegetarians, so many international students would be able to enjoy it. It would also give students from other countries an opportunity to experience authentic Indian flavors.

Please let me know if you would like me to prepare this dish and whether i need to bring any special equipment or ingredients.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Krupa Maisuria.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response covers all parts of the task well, fulfilling the three bullet points clearly. You successfully offer to make a popular dish from your country, describe the vegetable biryani with relevant details such as ingredients and how it is served, and explain why it should be included due to its popularity, representation of Indian food culture, and suitability for vegetarians. Your ideas are well developed and presented in a natural tone appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach an even higher band, you could expand slightly on how the dish represents the culture or provide even more specific contextual details about the event, ensuring every single bullet point features fully extended and elaborated supporting points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into sensible paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt, such as the introduction and offer, the description of the dish, the justification for its inclusion, and the closing inquiry. Cohesive devices and referencing are handled effectively, guiding the reader smoothly from one idea to the next. To move further up, you could employ a wider variety of advanced cohesive phrases to link sentences even more fluidly, avoiding any minor repetition in sentence openings.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common and topic-specific items such as 'aromatic spices', 'authentic Indian flavors', and 'special equipment'. Word choice is generally appropriate and allows the message to be communicated clearly. However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies and repetitions, such as starting a sentence with lowercase letters ('vegetable biryani is...', 'for an event like this.') and a couple of minor slip-ups like 'should be include' instead of 'included' and 'famous dish' where 'most famous dishes' would be more precise. Refining these word forms and ensuring strict control over spelling and capitalization will help lift your lexical score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well, such as in your final paragraph regarding equipment and ingredients. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing capitalization at the beginning of the second paragraph, incorrect verb forms ('should be include'), and a minor pronoun lowercase slip ('whether i need'). These errors do not impede communication, and you achieve a solid foundation of control over basic structures. To reach the next level, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and maintain meticulous attention to punctuation and capitalization throughout.
