Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I am writing this letter regarding the event which will be going to organise by the club. Recently, I got to know that the event is organised to celebrate the popular foods around the globe. I was very excited when I first heard about it. I always wanted to make my special dish and take the feedback from the audience with wide range of taste pallets.
I will make a typical famous indian dish for the event tomorrow. The dish is called Butter chicken which is very popular among the indians. It is delicious, healthy and easy to make.
Only a few things are needed to make the butter chicken. The chicken is cooked in butter for some time and later mixed with the paste of onion and tomato with some spices. It is the most convenient and easy way to cook the chicken if you are short on time.
I strongly believe that adding this dish in the menu of event will be a great idea as we are organizing this event to celebrate the famous foods from all over the world. It will be unfair to not add the most famous dish from india while celebrating a event about famous dishes.
I will be waiting for your approval with a positive reply.
Best wishes,
Tarunjeet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully cover all parts of the task prompt, which contributes to a solid performance in this area. You offer to make a popular dish from your country by stating, 'I will make a typical famous indian dish for the event tomorrow,' describe the dish by explaining that it is 'called Butter chicken' and outlining its ingredients and cooking method, and explain why it should be included by arguing that it aligns with the global food theme and that excluding India would be unfair. However, some ideas show a tendency to be slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the brief description of the cooking process which states that the chicken is 'cooked in butter for some time.' To move further up, you could expand on the cultural significance of the dish with more fully developed explanations rather than general statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, polite opening and closing, and a logical progression of ideas from your initial excitement to your offer, description, and justification. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your introduction, the dish description, and your concluding appeal to Luis. Nevertheless, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases feel slightly formulaic, and referencing can occasionally be improved, such as in the sentence 'It will be unfair to not add the most famous dish from india while celebrating a event about famous dishes,' where linking ideas more smoothly would enhance the flow of the text. Better use of referencing pronouns and cohesive conjunctions would strengthen the progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive words such as 'delicious,' 'convenient,' and 'approval.' However, there are some noticeable vocabulary, collocation, and spelling errors that prevent a higher score. For example, you wrote 'organise by' instead of the passive form 'be organised by,' misspelled 'indian' with a lowercase letter, used 'taste pallets' instead of the correct collocation 'taste palates,' and referred to 'a event' instead of 'an event.' While these errors do not impede communication, improving precision in word choice and ensuring correct word forms will help elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as 'I strongly believe that adding this dish in the menu of event will be a great idea as we are organizing this event...' However, there are some persistent errors in grammar and punctuation. For instance, the opening sentence contains an awkward verb tense construction ('which will be going to organise by'), and there are occasional preposition and article slips, such as 'adding this dish in the menu of event' instead of 'to the menu of the event.' These errors rarely impede communication, but producing a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and polishing your control over passive structures and prepositions is necessary to reach the next band.
