Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Luice,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to provide you information about a particular dish that I want you to include in the menu.

This dish is called butter chicken and it tastes delicious. This dish is well known in India because of its versatile flavours. Since I was a kid, I always helped my father in cooking it and I know the unique reciepe of my father. If you want I can help preparing butter chiken and provide you the list of spices.

In this dish we can use either boneless chicken or chiken with bones. It has a flavourfull gravy that include a lot of spices and butter. In order to make this dish, one to two hours are required as chiken needs to be cooked on low flame. It is a kind of chiken curry but it's texture ans flavour is far different from it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt only partially, as the final bullet point explaining why butter chicken should be included in the event is largely missing due to the unfinished concluding sentence, 'As many guests...'. While you successfully offered to make a dish and described what butter chicken is, your ideas remain limited and under-developed. To reach a higher level, you must ensure that all parts of the task are fully covered, with every bullet point thoroughly explained and extended without trailing off at the end of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation present in the letter, such as a standard greeting and an initial attempt to divide ideas into paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used rather repetitively, and the abrupt ending prevents the text from achieving a coherent overall arrangement. To improve, you need to structure your ideas logically across well-defined paragraphs, using a wider variety of cohesive links to connect your points smoothly from the introduction right through to a complete conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable spelling errors throughout the response, such as 'reciepe', 'chiken' (repeated multiple times), 'flavourfull', and 'ans', alongside minor word choice slips like 'Luice' instead of Luis. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To move up to the next band, you should aim to expand your range of vocabulary, use less common lexical items with greater precision, and carefully check your spelling of common cooking and food-related terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You display a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional attempts at complex forms. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles and prepositions in phrases like 'provide you information', 'on low flame', and 'it's texture ans flavour' where the possessive pronoun 'its' is confused with the contraction 'it is'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve your grammar score, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures while paying closer attention to article use, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation accuracy.
