Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing about the international food event that our club organizing next week. I was very excited about it.

I would offer to make a popular dish from my country, Pakistan, I want to make Chicken Biryani for the event.

Let me describe this dish. Biryani is a famous rice dish in Pakistan. It is made in chicken, rice, yogurt, and with many spices. We also added tomattos, onions, and sometimes potatos. It is a little spicy but very tasty. We usually eat it with raita which is made of yogurt. Pakistani people loves to eat at weddings and parties.

I think we should be included in the event because it is very popular and many international students have never tried it. Moreover, it is not very expensive to make and I can make a large quantity for many people. I am sure everyone will love it.

I am very thankful if you consider my suggestion.

Yours faithfull,

Ahmad.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully address all parts of the prompt by offering to make Chicken Biryani, describing its key ingredients and characteristics, and explaining why it should be included in the international food event. Your tone is appropriately friendly and polite for a letter to a club member. However, some bullet points are more fully developed than others; for instance, the description of the dish is a bit basic and relies on listing ingredients rather than extending your ideas fully. To reach a higher level, you need to expand your explanations further and provide a more fully developed account of why the dish suits the event, moving beyond simple statements like 'it is not very expensive to make' to offer deeper elaboration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, starting with an appropriate greeting and ending with a sign-off. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Let me describe this dish' to guide the reader through your ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes a little mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as in the sentence 'I think we should be included in the event' where the subject reference is slightly confused. To improve, you should employ a wider range of linking words more naturally and ensure that your pronouns and referencing create a smoother, more sophisticated flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using common food-related terms and attempting some less common phrases like 'international food event' and 'large quantity'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes such as 'tomattos' and 'potatos', an incorrect sign-off ('Yours faithfull,' instead of 'Yours faithfully,'), and awkward word choices such as 'Pakistani people loves to eat at weddings' instead of 'enjoys eating it'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in word choice, spelling, and word forms to achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and successfully using future and present tenses. However, your writing contains some noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'that our club organizing next week' (missing auxiliary verb) and 'It is made in chicken' (incorrect preposition; should be 'made with chicken'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation slips in your closing. These errors rarely impede communication, but they represent a mix of error-free and faulty structures. To improve, you should focus on sharpening your control over prepositions, verb tenses, and subject-verb agreement within complex sentences.
