Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Luis

I hope you are doing well. I am reaching out because there is a special dish from my country that I want to offer you for this great Event.

I already know that this Event is for celebrating popular food, and my dish could not be more traditional. It is name is Bandeja Paisa, and it is a known food in my region. Everyone to visit my country had to taste this special dish. It is big plate with three different types of protein, with rice, salad, and sweet potate, it seems like having too many calories but once you try it, you will not want to stop to eat.

I hope that this dishes is included in the event because it represents all our culture, history and tradition. In addittion it is served in a colorfull plates to be more atractive. I make sure that anyone to wants to try it will be satisfied and they will want to order it again.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. You clearly offer to make a traditional dish for the event, describe it as a large plate featuring three proteins with rice, salad, and sweet potato, and explain that it represents the rich culture and history of your country. Your purpose and tone are consistently appropriate for a semi-formal letter to an event organiser. All requirements of the prompt are covered with relevant and well-extended ideas, demonstrating a clear and purposeful approach to the task throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression throughout, moving smoothly from the opening greeting and purpose to the description of the dish, its justification, and the closing sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each main point. You successfully use cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and referencing pronouns to connect your ideas. While paragraphing and overall progression clearly meet the level required, cohesion is occasionally slightly mechanical, indicating that you are on the threshold of more flexible organisational skills.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'traditional dish', 'proteins', and 'colorfull plates'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as calling the dish 'It is name' instead of 'Its name', writing 'sweet potate' instead of 'potato', and 'colorfull' instead of 'colorful'. Spelling and word-choice errors occur throughout the text, though they do not seriously impede communication. Expanding your vocabulary and polishing your spelling will help you move to a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'once you try it, you will not want to stop'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'Everyone to visit... had to taste', incorrect prepositions such as 'stop to eat' instead of 'stop eating', and awkward phrasing like 'anyone to wants'. Punctuation errors also appear in your sign-off ('Your sincerely'). These grammatical lapses mean control is characteristic of the band, with errors persisting across various structures.
