Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to inform you that yesterday i received a letter from club where club is organsing an event to celebrate popular food around the world.

firstly, I offer to make a butter chicken dish in a event because it is most popular dish in my country .

Furthermore, specially this dish made by chicken where in that dish included different type of spices which is called homemade spices . Moreover, it has 55 gram of protien in one servering and also it is healthy dish as campared to other dishes.

I would appreciate it , if you could add my homecountry dish in the event because my main reason to add this dish is that firstly it is healthy and it contain high protein. I think that other students definetly add unhealthy dishes in an event.

"Thank you for your attention.I look forward to hearing from you soon."

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You successfully address all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You offer to make butter chicken, describe what the dish is by mentioning its ingredients and nutritional profile, and explain why it should be included due to its health benefits compared to other potential dishes. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, your description of the dish and the reasons for inclusion are slightly repetitive, focusing heavily on its protein content and healthiness rather than expanding on its cultural appeal or taste. To move to a higher level, you should ensure that all parts of the prompt are explored with equal depth and better extended elaboration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement, and you use basic cohesive devices such as 'firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas together. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical rather than fluid, and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the phrase 'specially this dish made by chicken where in that dish included'. Furthermore, your paragraphing needs better control; the middle section is clumped together, and your sign-off includes quotation marks and an incorrect closing formula before 'Yours faithfully'. To achieve a higher score, you need to use cohesive devices more naturally and organise your thoughts into distinct, logical paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words such as 'nutritional' concepts and 'spices', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling throughout your response. For example, you write 'organsing' instead of organising, 'protien' instead of protein, 'servering' instead of serving, and 'campared' instead of compared. Additionally, phrases like 'homecountry dish' sound awkward. While these lexical errors and spelling mistakes do not completely impede communication, they restrict your score because they show limited precision and control over word forms. To improve, focus on accurate spelling and natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I would appreciate it , if you could add my homecountry dish in the event because my main reason...'. However, your control of grammar is inconsistent, featuring frequent errors in articles, prepositions, and sentence structures. Examples include missing capitalisation ('i'), incorrect auxiliary verbs ('yesterday i received a letter... where club is organsing'), and awkward passive constructions ('this dish made by chicken where in that dish included different type of spices'). Punctuation is also inaccurate in places, such as unnecessary spaces before commas. To reach the next band, you need to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate tighter control over complex grammatical structures.
