Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
I am writing with regards to the Food Festival event that the International Students' Club will be organising next week at La Croisette. As a member of the club , I have noticed that my friends were not aware of my country's location. I am therefore proposing to make a popular dish originated from my native country Mauritius. It will be an occasion for other members to discover the culture and tradition therein.
The famous dish of my beautiful island is called Briani. It is a dish comprising of flavoured spicy rice accompanied by chicken or meat and potatoes. Briani is made with spices sourced from India and it depends on people some like it very hot and others less. The aroma that comes from it will make water coming into your mouth despite being cooked in a sealed pot with high flame.
Consequently, I am particularly thrilled about this upcoming event to introduce my country's background and I am pretty sure that it will be a success.
Please let me know what you think about this and any other suggestions from your side would be most welcomed.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Faranaz J

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You successfully cover all three bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly offer to make a traditional dish, describe its ingredients and preparation, and explain why it should be included to showcase your country's culture. Your position is consistent throughout the letter, and the purpose is immediately clear. However, while your ideas are relevant, some parts could be extended slightly further to reach the highest level of development; for instance, the explanation of why the dish should be included focuses mainly on general discovery rather than detailing specific sensory or community benefits that would enrich the festival experience. Overall, your response addresses the task thoroughly and fulfills the required communicative purpose with an appropriate semi-formal tone.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You establish a natural opening by stating the context of the letter, move smoothly into the details of the dish, and conclude with an appropriate call to action. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'I am therefore proposing' and 'Consequently', though some transitional links feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used logically to separate your main points into distinct blocks of text. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you could employ a wider variety of referencing words and more sophisticated cohesive phrases to link your sentences with greater subtlety and fluidity, ensuring that connections between ideas are entirely seamless.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common items such as 'aroma', 'traditional', and 'scented'. You attempt to use precise culinary terms to describe the dish, which effectively communicates your ideas. However, there are a few noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as writing 'a dish originated from' instead of 'originating from', 'comprising of' instead of 'comprising', and the idiom 'make water coming into your mouth' rather than 'make your mouth water'. While these minor lexical slips do not impede communication, you need to demonstrate greater precision in collocations and idioms to reach a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You display a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several error-free sentences, demonstrating a fair degree of control over grammar and punctuation. Nevertheless, a few persistent grammatical errors occur, such as the missing article in 'with high flame' (which should be 'on a high flame') and minor prepositional inconsistencies. Your punctuation is generally sound, though some commas are used unnecessarily, such as after 'club'. To improve further, you should aim for a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and eliminate minor slip-ups in prepositions and articles to ensure complete grammatical control.
