Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I came to know that an International Students club is going to organize an event related to famous food from all over the world. As a member of club I would like to offer some suggestions regarding Indian cuisine.

The traditional dish is Mustard greens curry and cornmeal flatbread. It is famous traditional food in punjab, especially cooked in winter outdoor on a mud stove, and called sarso da saag and makki di roti in their punjabi languge. Having mustard curry with cornmeal flatbread is a true treat for the tastebuds.

This dish should be definitely included in the occassion because it's making technique is different than other food, and it will attract visitors with its fragrance and taste. I am confident, everyone will like it, and would like to try again after visiting the event.

I hope you will take this suggestion into consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Ramandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. You clearly adopt the required role of a club member and write to Luis to offer a traditional Indian dish, describe it as mustard greens curry and cornmeal flatbread, and explain why it should be included due to its unique preparation and sensory appeal. Your position is maintained clearly throughout. While all bullet points are covered, some ideas—such as the explanation of why the dish should be included—tend to generalise slightly rather than being fully extended with deep elaboration. To reach the highest bands, you could provide more vivid detail regarding how the dish is prepared on a mud stove and how its inclusion would specifically enhance the cultural atmosphere of the club event.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with an appropriate opening, transition smoothly into describing the dish in the second paragraph, justify its inclusion in the third, and close with a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. You successfully utilise some cohesive devices, such as referencing ('This dish', 'everyone'), though the flow could be made even smoother with a wider variety of linking words and more flexible cohesive ties. To achieve a higher level, ensure that transitions between your sentences feel entirely natural and effortless without relying on basic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'cuisine', 'traditional dish', and 'tastebuds'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling that prevent a higher score. For instance, writing 'I came to know that' is slightly informal for a well-crafted letter, 'punjab' and 'languge' contain spelling slips, and 'it's making technique' contains an inappropriate possessive form for a cooking process ('its preparation method' would be more natural). Additionally, 'occassion' has a spelling error. To improve, focus on expanding your use of precise collocations and ensure careful proofreading for spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to combine clauses, such as in the sentence starting with 'As a member of club I would like...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('As a member of club', 'in punjab', 'in their punjabi languge'), an unnecessary comma after 'confident', and slight prepositional issues. However, these errors are relatively minor and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily understand your message. To reach higher bands, you should aim to produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine your control over articles and punctuation.
