Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am so glad about ongoing preparation to celebrate popular meals from all around the world, as it's the first of it kind.

The purpose of my letter is run by you if i could make a famous dish from my country Nigeria. I have seen several food suggestion proffered by other students but none comes from an African country and i will love to make a popular one from mine.

The meal is Amala which is made out of yam flour, a dish which is prominent among the yoruba culture in Nigeria. It is a meal that has been in existence for a long time and is considered a local dish, it is served alongside a native soup called Ewedu and Gbegiri with stew containing lots of protein.

Variety they say is the spice of life and a meal that has been in existence for decades is not one to be overlooked. People should get a taste of culture because that is what this dish brings, a vibrant and unique taste of flavour

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. All three bullet points are covered, fulfilling the requirements for the mid-level range. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, while the dish 'Amala' and its accompaniments are introduced, the explanation of why it should be included leans on general statements about culture rather than deeply exploring specific reasons why it would uniquely benefit this particular international food event. The tone is appropriately informal and polite, fitting the letter format to Luis. To reach the next level, the ideas would need to be more fully expanded with deeper elaboration and clearer supporting details for every point raised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the opening greeting through the proposal, the description, the justification, and the closing sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different aspects of the request. Cohesive devices are present, such as transitional phrases like 'The meal is Amala which is...' and 'Variety they say is the spice of life', though referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or simplistic. For instance, sentences are sometimes loosely linked without smooth cohesive transitions between clauses. To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to employ more sophisticated and flexible referencing and cohesive devices to make the flow completely natural and unobtrusive throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'proffered', 'prominent', and 'vibrant'. There are occasional word choice and spelling inaccuracies that do not impede communication, such as 'convinence' instead of 'convenience', 'run by you' instead of 'run it by you', and lower-case capitalization for proper nouns like 'yoruba'. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. To progress further, the writer should aim for greater precision in word choice and collocation, ensuring that less common vocabulary is used accurately and naturally without spelling slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and compound sentences. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('the first of it kind' instead of 'its kind', 'if i could make' with a lower-case pronoun, and punctuation issues in compound sentences). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. The writer shows good control over basic verb tenses, though complex structures occasionally contain minor inaccuracies. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences while maintaining a wide variety of complex grammatical structures with precise control.
