Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to suggest you to add one of the popular Indian dish called 'Biryani' in an event. I particularly like this dish because mixer, taste and aroma are great combinations and I am sure that our team will also like it. I am personally very excited for this event because It will be wonderful opportunity to meet people from different part of the world and exchange the culture.

Biryani is very popular among the Asian people. It is made of rice, yogurt and other vegetables. The aroma comes from biryani would definitely attract many people in this event. I am advising to add this because most of the cusine in the events would be made of meat and chicken. Due to this, vegetarian eaters can not really participate and enjoy. Therefore, I believe this dish will served their demand well.

I hope you will be considered my suggestions.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

Vaibhav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the required bullet points of the task. You clearly offer to make a popular dish from your country ('Biryani'), describe what it is ('made of rice, yogurt and other vegetables'), and explain why it should be included ('vegetarian eaters can not really participate and enjoy'). Your purpose in writing is apparent throughout. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or touch upon points superficially. For instance, the description of the dish is rather brief and could be elaborated with more specific ingredients or flavours to reach a higher level. Overall, you address all parts of the prompt adequately, fulfilling the core requirements of this task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear opening and closing, and the information is divided into logical paragraphs. You use basic cohesive devices to connect your thoughts, such as 'Therefore' and 'However', which helps the reader follow your letter easily. However, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For example, sentences like 'I am advising to add this because...' and 'Due to this...' show a predictable pattern of connecting ideas. To improve further, you need to use a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that transitions between sentences flow more naturally without relying on formulaic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related words such as 'aroma', 'cuisine', and 'vegetarian'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, phrases like 'suggest you to add one of the popular Indian dish' contain errors in word form and singular/plural agreement ('dish' instead of 'dishes'), and 'mixer, taste and aroma are great combinations' is an awkward collocation. You also make minor spelling or phrasing slips, such as 'cusine' instead of 'cuisine'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a limited and developing lexical range that prevents you from achieving a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some attempt at complex sentence forms, such as using subordinate clauses with 'because' and 'that'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, for example, 'The aroma comes from biryani would definitely attract' (missing a relative pronoun or participle like 'that comes') and 'I hope you will be considered my suggestions' (incorrect passive voice). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but prepositional patterns and verb forms occasionally need closer attention. These errors rarely impede communication, but they occur with enough frequency to keep the grammatical control at this level. To progress, aim for a wider variety of error-free complex structures.
