Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to add one dish from my country in an event to celebrate popular food from around the world.
I am also a member of club and came to know that club is organising an event. I know about various famous dishes of India and I want that we represent one dish from my country. One of the famous dish is laddo, a sweet dish that every Indian family have on special occasions to celebrate their happiness.
However, this dish is not difficult to make. All ingredients are easily available like chickpeas flour, the ghee ,sugar and the dried fruits. The process is little bit time consuming but easy to make.
Moreover, I want this in an event to show how Indians celebrate their special and auspicious moments with sweets. If someone offering laddo, it means they have some good news or they are celebrate their happiness. This dish is the sign of happiness in any family.
I hope you will consider my suggestion. I am waiting for your response.
Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, as you offer to make laddo, describe the ingredients and preparation, and explain why it represents a celebration of happiness in Indian culture. Note that ten words copied directly from the task prompt were excluded from the word count. While all bullet points are addressed, some ideas show a tendency to be slightly repetitive, such as the repeated emphasis on the word 'happiness' in the final paragraphs, which prevents the ideas from being fully extended. To reach the highest bands, you would need to expand on the cultural significance with more precise details and varied explanation rather than restating the same core concept.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established right from the opening greeting and introductory lines. You use basic paragraphing effectively to separate your introduction, the description of the dish, and your explanation of its cultural importance. However, cohesion sometimes feels a bit mechanical or faulty due to repetitive sentence openings and transitions, such as 'Moreover' and 'However', which are not always used with complete logical precision. To achieve a higher band, you should integrate a smoother range of cohesive devices and ensure referencing between sentences is tighter and less predictable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items related to cooking and culture such as 'auspicious moments', 'time consuming', and 'ingredients'. There are, however, some word choice and word form errors that occasionally distract, such as 'chickpeas flour' instead of 'chickpea flour' and saying 'If someone offering laddo' instead of 'If someone offers laddo'. Your spelling is generally clear, and these minor slips do not impede communication. To move up to a higher band, you should aim for greater precision in collocations and incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated lexical items with fewer errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and intent to use subordinate clauses. There are, nevertheless, some grammatical errors throughout the text, such as missing articles ('add one dish... in an event' and 'the ghee ,sugar'), incorrect pluralisation ('One of the famous dish'), and verb form issues ('they are celebrate'). These errors occur alongside correct sentences, and they rarely impede overall communication. To reach a higher standard, you need to produce more frequent error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter control over subject-verb agreement and article usage.
