Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included, which meets the basic requirements of the task. However, the development of these ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. For instance, the description of the dish is restricted to basic ingredients like curd, rice, and onion, and the explanation of why it should be included relies heavily on simple assertions such as 'people also like it' and the example of foreign friends. Furthermore, the tone lacks appropriate semi-formal letter conventions in places, such as the abrupt opening and closing styling. To move to a higher level, the ideas would need to be extended with more specific detail, clearer elaboration, and a more consistently appropriate tone suited to a club event organiser.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter exhibits some organisational structure with basic greetings and a rough separation of ideas into paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of thought. Cohesive devices are used rather inadequately and repetitively, notably the over-reliance on basic conjunctions and connectors like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'and'. Referencing within the text is also at times unclear, as seen in confusing pronoun shifts such as 'he and she taste it and they love it'. Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas within the central body are lumped together rather than logically segmented. To achieve a higher standard, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more accurately and ensure that information flows logically from one point to the next without abrupt leaps.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, demonstrating basic word choices with noticeable errors. There are several spelling mistakes, such as 'cury' for curry, 'deliouses' for delicious, and issues with word formation like 'make' instead of 'made'. Additionally, word choice is sometimes imprecise, as seen in expressions like 'with the aid of curd' and 'taste better'. While the vocabulary allows the writer to convey a basic message, these lexical inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the range of expression. To progress, the student should aim to expand their vocabulary range, incorporate more precise thematic food terminology, and ensure correct spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple and long, run-on compound sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include tense inconsistencies and missing articles, such as 'I glad that you organise' and 'it contain one hour'. There are also frequent punctuation lapses, such as missing capitalisation at the start of sentences and after full stops, alongside awkward prepositional usage. To improve, the writer must work on mastering basic sentence boundaries, reducing frequency of errors, and demonstrating better control over verb forms and complex clause structures.
