Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you, as a member of an International Students' club, offering to make biryani, one of the most popular dishes of my home country, Pakistan.
I believe that this is a huge opportunity for me to represent my country. You can think of biryani, as spicy rice with, eggs, potatoes, and chicken. We also add yellow colour into it to make it look appealling. The best thing about biryani is that it is easy to eat unlike other Asian dishes.
A large number of people already know about this dish. In fact, according to a local survey on biryani, people from all nationalities, and diverse culture and race expressed their willingness to try this dish. Furthermore, food tells us a lot about a country's culture and people. Therefore, I strongly believe that it should be included in the event and I am confident that people would love this dish.
I look forward to a positive response.
Kind regards,
Asad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a natural and engaging semi-formal tone. You clearly offer to make biryani, describe what the dish is, and explain why it should be included in the event, satisfying the requirements of the task. Your ideas are extended and supported nicely, particularly when you discuss the local survey and how food reflects culture. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise regarding the ease of eating Asian dishes compared to others. To move even higher, you could have provided a slightly deeper description of the cooking process or unique flavours of the dish to make the response even more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with an appropriate salutation and a polite opening, move smoothly into your offer and description, and then justify its inclusion before concluding warmly. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of your message. You use cohesive devices flexibly, such as "Furthermore" and "Therefore", to link your thoughts together. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional minor polishing in how sentences flow could make the overall structure feel even more seamless and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You display an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as "international students' club", "local survey", and "diverse culture". There are occasional lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as spelling "appealling" with a double 'l' instead of "appealing", and the slightly awkward phrasing "yellow colour into it". These minor word-choice and spelling slips do not impede communication, but to reach a higher band, you would need to use a wider range of sophisticated vocabulary with greater precision and flawless spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
There is a good variety of complex sentence structures used throughout the letter, such as the concessive and relative clauses in sentences like "The best thing about biryani is that it is easy to eat unlike other Asian dishes." You demonstrate good control of grammar and punctuation, with frequent error-free sentences. However, a few minor mechanical errors persist, such as unnecessary commas in phrases like "You can think of biryani, as spicy rice with, eggs..." which disrupt the flow of punctuation. Maintaining strict control over comma usage and prepositions will help elevate your grammatical performance further.
