Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
The purpose of writing this letter is to indentify the main activity of the club that is celebrated delicacies around the globe. As a member of the international student club i should share my thoughts with you about what is going to be included from my country india.
The most favorite cuisine of my nation is biryani. this dish is over 300 years old. It was first made in hyderabad as a mistake when assistant chef of the palace accidently put vegetable in flavoured rice. when it was presented to king he was amazed by the taste of it.
In recent times, people make biryani in a much complicated way, they would like to include everything in that. It can be made with meat and so with veggies. I would like to include this dish because my mother has taught myself to make biryani in an authentic way, so people can get to experience the real taste of india.
Thank you for your consideration, i hope to hear from you soon.
Yours truly,
Kevalkumar Nayi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you offer biryani, describe its ingredients and origin, and explain that your mother taught you to prepare it so guests can experience an authentic taste of India. This makes the response relevant and gives the organiser a clear reason to include the dish. The description of its history and the contrast between meat and vegetable versions add useful detail. However, the account of its origin is quite specific but not clearly connected to why it is popular, and the explanation of its appeal to event visitors could be developed further—for example, by mentioning its distinctive flavours or broad popularity. The main ideas are present, but they are not all equally extended or fully clarified.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall shape: an opening, a paragraph introducing and describing biryani, a paragraph explaining its preparation and suitability, and a polite closing. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “I would like to include this dish because” make the purpose of the final paragraph clear. Some connections are less smooth, however. The opening spends time restating the club’s purpose before moving to your offer, while the history in the second paragraph shifts abruptly from the dish’s age to its origin story. The reference in “include everything in that” is also vague. Use clearer links between the dish’s features and its value at the event, and make each paragraph’s focus more direct.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the letter, including topic-specific terms such as “biryani,” “flavoured rice,” “authentic,” and “delicacies.” These help communicate the dish and its cultural significance. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “the real taste of India.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “most favorite cuisine” (biryani is a dish, rather than a cuisine), “vegetable” where a plural or ingredient description is needed, and “complicated way” for a cooking method that is more elaborate. Spelling errors such as “indentify” and “accidently,” along with inconsistent capitalisation of “India,” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise food-related collocations and check spelling and proper nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, including the explanation beginning “because my mother has taught…” and the clause “when assistant chef of the palace…”. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “this dish is over 300 years old” needs a capital at the start of the sentence, and “when it was presented to king” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “In recent times” shifts from present to “they would like,” making the time and subject less clear; “my mother has taught myself” also uses the wrong reflexive form. Review articles, pronouns, sentence boundaries, and consistent tense. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentences clearer.
