Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am an active member of our Lakehead International Club. I recently heard that our club is organising an event to host food from around different nations. Hence, I would like to participate in the program representing my country.

I was thinking of making momo; a popular snack from Nepal. It is the most delicious everyday snack which is prefered by every Nepalese. Additionally, It is easy to cook and serve during any ceremony as it takes few minutes to cook, once everything is prepared in advance.

Momo is basically a dumplings filled with chicken stuffings and steamed for about 20 minutes. Furthermore, it is served with chatni( Nepalese Tomato sauce) made from tomato and various spices which enhance the taste and flavour.

The momo should be included in the event as it is the only food which a Nepalese would suggest any foreigner to try because of its availability and convenience. In addition, if we ask anyone from my country to include a Nepalese dish in any event, it would definitely be momo because of its taste and popularity.

I hope to get a prompt response from you so that I could make all the preparation on time.

Thank you for your consideration.

Best Regards,

Subas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare momo, describe it as steamed dumplings with chicken filling and tomato-based chutney, and explain its popularity and suitability for the event. The offer is direct, and the closing request for a prompt response gives the letter a practical purpose. Your reasons are relevant and supported, particularly the dish’s popularity and convenience. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain more specifically what international guests might enjoy—for example, its distinctive spices or the chance to try a familiar dumpling in a Nepalese style. The claim that it is “the only food” a Nepalese person would recommend is also rather sweeping; a more measured explanation would make your case more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the event and your offer, describe the dish, explain why it belongs at the event, and finish with a polite request. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and connectors such as “Additionally,” “Furthermore,” and “In addition” make relationships between ideas clear. At times, however, these linking expressions feel somewhat repetitive or mechanical, and the two reasons for including momo overlap in their emphasis on popularity. You could improve the flow by varying how you connect ideas and by making each paragraph contribute a distinct point—for instance, one about the dish’s flavour and another about its cultural significance.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and includes relevant food terms such as “dumplings,” “steamed,” “stuffings,” and “spices.” You also attempt more specific expressions, including “representing my country” and “availability and convenience,” though some choices are not fully natural or precise. For example, “food from around different nations” is awkward, and “chicken stuffings” would be better expressed as “chicken filling.” “Chatni” may be unfamiliar to readers, so introduce it as chutney and explain it briefly. Check spelling and presentation too: “prefered” should be “preferred,” and the space in “chatni( Nepalese” is missing. More accurate collocations and a few precise descriptive words would strengthen your control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which enhance the taste and flavour” and a reason clause beginning “as it is the only food.” The message remains clear, and several sentences are controlled. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain, however. In “I was thinking of making momo; a popular snack,” the semicolon does not correctly join the sentence to the fragment; use a comma or a dash. “It” after “Additionally” should not be capitalised mid-sentence, and “which enhance” needs singular agreement if it refers to the chutney. The phrase “so that I could make all the preparation” also needs a more suitable noun form and construction. Proofreading these patterns would improve accuracy while preserving your sentence variety.
