Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. First of all, I am really grateful to be a part of this phenomenal International Student club. I just heard from my mate that our group is going to organise an event where food from different areas of the world will be celebrated.I am also willing to take part in this occasion as my country has its very famous dish of its own. Beside being a good academic student, I am a great cook at home.
For this purpose, I will make my country Pakistan's local cuisine which is a mixture of rice and chicken curry. It is basically a combination of onion, tomatoes, chillies and yogurt paste. This all mixture is cooked with marinated chicken, local spices of my own country and later mixed with boil rice over light flame. At the end, it is smoked with burnt coal before being served. I am confident that everyone will admire this cuisine.
Despite being an only asian member in the club, I would ask you to include me in this event where everyone can get a chance to experience my countries famous food. Mostly the individuals of other regions are habitual of eating bland and balanced spices. This dish is a little spicy and tangy which tastes fantastic on taste buds. This slight difference of flavour and aroma will make it unique to be displayed in this event.
I hope you find it interesting to include it in this special occasion. I will wait for your response.
Yours faithfully,
Muzdalfa Zain

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare a Pakistani dish, explain its ingredients and cooking method, and give reasons for including it. The description of rice, chicken, spices and the final smoking step gives the organiser a concrete sense of what you would contribute. Your explanation that its spicy, tangy flavour would differ from other foods also supports your case. The main limitation is that some support is broad rather than fully developed: for example, the claim that people from other regions are “habitual of eating bland” food generalises about their tastes. You could strengthen the letter by naming the dish and explaining more specifically what makes it representative or appealing to a diverse audience.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening and offer, a paragraph describing the dish, and a final paragraph explaining its value to the event. This makes the purpose easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “For this purpose,” “At the end,” and “Despite being” to connect ideas. However, some transitions feel mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely, and the long second paragraph contains several preparation steps that could be grouped more smoothly. The sentence beginning “Despite being an only asian member” also makes the connection between your membership and the request less clear. Use more direct links between the dish’s qualities and the event, and ensure each paragraph develops one main point.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing food and flavour, including “marinated,” “local spices,” “spicy and tangy,” and “aroma.” These choices help make the dish sound distinctive. There are also several inaccurate or unnatural expressions, such as “famous dish of its own,” “boil rice,” “taste buds,” and “displayed in this event.” “Cuisine” is also used where the name of a particular dish would be more precise. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they limit naturalness and precision. Aim for familiar collocations such as “a well-known national dish,” “boiled rice,” and “served at the event,” and check possessive forms such as “my country’s.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including “This dish is a little spicy and tangy which tastes fantastic on taste buds” and the longer explanation of how the ingredients are cooked. The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Beside being” needs a different construction, and “This all mixture is cooked” has an awkward determiner order. In “Despite being an only asian member,” the article and sentence structure are not controlled, while “my countries famous food” needs a possessive form. There is also a missing space after “celebrated.” Review articles, possessives, and clause construction, then break long process descriptions into clearer sentences.
