Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter because I have heard about the food festival which is taking in the first week of October.

I am very excited to attend this food festival because I believe it would be great fun.Furthermore, I have a plan to make a popular dish from my home country in the event. This dish is called biryani and it is very famous in my country. The main ingredients of biryani are rice and chicken with lots of other spices. This is rich in flavour and colour. I hope everyone would enjoy and appreciate it. Moreover, the uniqueness of this recipie is that I learned it from my grandmother, so it also has cultural heritage in it. I know the main theme of this festival is to introduce people with different cultural foods.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer to make biryani, describe its ingredients and flavour, and explain its cultural value and relevance to the festival’s theme. The detail that you learned the recipe from your grandmother gives the offer a personal dimension, while the reference to introducing people to different cultural foods supports your reason for including it. To make the ideas more fully extended and supported, explain a little more about what makes biryani popular in your country or how it would contribute to the event. Also make the offer more direct—for example, state that you would be happy to prepare and bring it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible progression from the event, to your proposed dish, to its ingredients and cultural significance, and then to a polite closing. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Moreover” help show how the ideas relate. However, the main body is presented as one long paragraph, so the offer, description and reason are not visually separated. Some links also feel mechanical, and the transition from your excitement about attending to your offer could be smoother. Use two or three purposeful paragraphs and connect ideas more naturally—for instance, introduce the dish directly after stating that you would like to contribute.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the letter and includes relevant terms such as “ingredients,” “spices,” “flavour,” “uniqueness” and “cultural heritage.” These help communicate the dish’s appeal and significance. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward choices that limit precision: “the food festival which is taking” is incomplete, “introduce people with” uses an unsuitable collocation, and “recipie” is misspelled. “Great fun” and “very famous” are understandable but general. Aim for more natural phrasing and precise description, such as saying the festival “is taking place” and that it “introduces people to” cuisines from different cultures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the relative clause in “which is taking” and the reason clause beginning “because.” Most of the message remains easy to understand, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. In “the food festival which is taking in the first week,” the verb phrase is incomplete; write “which is taking place in the first week.” Add a space after the full stop in “great fun.Furthermore,” and consider “I hope everyone will enjoy it” rather than “would enjoy,” since you are describing a likely future response. These revisions would improve control while preserving your clear, friendly tone.
