Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter for a request to grant me permission to make a famous dish "Punjabi Thali" for the event which we are organising to celebrate the food from around the world.

I am very excited to be the part of this event as a member of International students' club. We will have a large number of people who belong to different places and have different cuisines.I would request you to allow me to make a special dish of India that is Punjabi Thali and serve the people from around the world so as to make my country a known name for its cuisine. Moreover the Punjabi thali is a full meal which includes rice, chapatis, pickle, cooked vegetables and also a sweet named gulab jamun. I personally feel this dish should be added in the event as it is full of proteins and nutrients. this can attract the people to eat healthy.

thanking you,

Tanzil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you offer to prepare Punjabi Thali, explain that it includes rice, chapatis, pickle, vegetables and gulab jamun, and give a reason for including it by referring to its nutritional value. The offer and description are clear and relevant. The explanation of why it belongs at an international food event is less fully developed: saying it is nutritious and could encourage healthy eating does not explain much about its cultural significance or appeal to visitors. The request for permission is also more prominent than a direct offer to contribute. To strengthen the letter, explain what makes the dish distinctive in Punjabi or Indian cuisine and how guests could enjoy or learn from trying it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The ideas follow a generally sensible order: you introduce your request, describe the event and dish, then give a reason for including it. This makes the letter understandable. However, most of the content is placed in one long paragraph, so the offer, description and justification are not clearly separated. Some links are also mechanical or unclear, particularly the repeated use of “and” in the list and the transition from the event’s international audience to making your country “a known name.” The final sentence, “this can attract the people to eat healthy,” is not smoothly connected to the preceding point. Use two or three focused paragraphs and clearer transitions to make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including specific food names such as “chapatis,” “pickle” and “gulab jamun,” as well as “cuisines” and “nutrients.” These details make the description concrete. There are, however, several awkward or imprecise expressions, such as “writing this letter for a request to grant me permission,” “make my country a known name,” and “attract the people to eat healthy.” These choices sometimes make the tone less natural for a polite letter. Aim for more precise collocations and a consistent formal register; for example, you could say you would like to contribute a dish and introduce guests to Punjabi cuisine. The meaning remains clear despite these word-choice issues.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the sentence beginning “I would request you to allow me…” and the clause explaining what the thali includes. The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “to be the part” needs an article adjustment, “cuisines.I” needs a space after the full stop, and “this can attract” should begin with a capital letter. The long sentence starting “I would request you…” also carries several ideas and would be clearer if divided. Check articles, sentence boundaries and capitalization, while continuing to use a mix of sentence structures.
