Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to inform you of my willingness to participate in the upcoming food celebration hosted by the International Students' club.

I am thinking to bring Biryani which is a popular Pakistani dish. It has its origin from the ancient Mughal era. Many foreigners who visit Pakistan love to try this traditional specialty of our country.

Let me tell you about this dish. It is made from chicken gravy having a unique blend of traditional Asian spices and served with rice. Garnishing is done with corriander leaves and lemons. Many people like to eat it with salad and yogurt which enhances its taste.

I believe Biryani should be included in the event, as it will allow visitors to have a taste of famous Pakistani cuisine. In addition, other foods at the event are mainly Mediterranean, Italian and Chinese. This will be a a different desi blend from subcontinent. I assure you that guests will love Biryani due to its spicy and rich flavour.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Sara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three requirements clearly: you offer to bring biryani, describe its ingredients and accompaniments, and explain its value to the event. The details about chicken gravy, rice, spices, coriander, lemon, salad and yogurt make the dish easy to picture, while the contrast with Mediterranean, Italian and Chinese food gives a relevant reason for including it. Your assurance that guests will enjoy its flavour also supports your proposal. The response is well developed overall, with only a small opportunity to make the cultural contribution more specific—for example, explain briefly how biryani represents Pakistani food traditions. This would add depth to an already complete and persuasive response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce your offer, describe the dish, explain why it belongs at the event, and close politely. Paragraphing supports these stages, and phrases such as “Let me tell you about this dish” and “In addition” help guide the reader. The contrast between the other cuisines and a Pakistani dish is also easy to follow. To make the organisation even smoother, avoid slightly abrupt transitions between the dish’s description and its cultural significance, and connect the final assurance more directly to the event’s purpose. The repeated use of “dish” and “event” is understandable, but some varied referencing would make cohesion less noticeable and more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of food and cultural vocabulary, including “traditional specialty,” “blend of traditional Asian spices,” “garnishing,” and “rich flavour.” These choices make the description specific and help convey the dish’s appeal. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward choices that keep the vocabulary from sounding consistently natural: “I am thinking to bring” is an unsuitable phrase, “a different desi blend from subcontinent” is unclear, and “corriander” is misspelled. The phrase “chicken gravy” may also be less precise than a description of the spiced chicken preparation. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling, while retaining the useful cultural and culinary detail already present.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a mix of sentence forms, including the relative clause in “Biryani which is a popular Pakistani dish” and the longer sentence explaining how the dish is served. Most ideas remain clear, and you use present-tense descriptions appropriately. Some grammatical errors remain, however: “I am thinking to bring” uses an incorrect verb pattern, and “This will be a a different…” contains a repeated article and an unclear construction. The opening sentence would also be more accurate with a comma after “Luis,” and the relative clause about biryani needs clearer punctuation. Review verb patterns after “think,” article use, and sentence punctuation to improve accuracy while continuing to use varied structures.
