Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my interest to participate in the event as a member of an international students' club.
I am planning to cook the most delicious and popular dish from my home country, such as biryani. It has been so long that I have not prepared any Pakistani dish. I am seeking permission to allow me to present this particular food.
Overall, biryani is a very spicy dish based on rice, blended with a variety of spices. We can also add any sort of meat to make it more flavourful. Spices like turmeric, red chilli powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder are usually mixed based on individual's spice tolerance level. It is also a national dish of Pakistan therefore, it is served on every occasion, for example, weddings and Eid festivals.
I believe this dish will be enjoyed by many people of different cultures. Moreover, biryani is not easily available in many restaurants, so people get a chance to taste a new dish. Furthermore, these ingredients are commonly appreciated by many people, so I hope people will like it.
Yours sincerely,
XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requirements: you offer to prepare biryani, describe its rice, spices and optional meat, and explain its cultural significance and appeal to visitors. The offer is clear in “I am seeking permission to allow me to present this particular food,” and the examples of weddings and Eid help explain its place in Pakistan. Your reasons for including it are relevant, especially the opportunity for people to try something new. To strengthen the response further, develop the dish’s appeal with a more specific example of its flavour or preparation, and avoid broad claims such as “not easily available in many restaurants” unless you can qualify them. Overall, the purpose and position remain clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear progression from your offer, to a description of biryani, and then to reasons for including it. Separate paragraphs make these stages easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” help connect your supporting points. This coherent organisation is a strength. However, the final paragraph relies on several similar additions, so the links can feel somewhat mechanical rather than showing how the ideas relate. For example, explain how the dish’s ingredients or cultural role make it appealing to a diverse audience, instead of presenting each reason as a separate claim. A more natural range of connections and clearer links between supporting details would make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the topic and includes relevant food terms such as “turmeric,” “coriander powder,” and “spice tolerance.” These details make the description specific, and the meaning remains clear throughout. You also attempt more descriptive language, including “flavourful” and “popular.” At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “express my interest to participate” and “ingredients are commonly appreciated” do not sound fully natural in this context. Some wording is also repetitive, particularly “dish” and “people.” Aim for more precise phrases suited to a polite event letter, and vary how you refer to the food and its potential audience. These refinements would improve flexibility and naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “I believe this dish will be enjoyed by many people of different cultures.” The description also combines details effectively in a longer sentence about spices and individual tolerance. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “I am writing to express my interest to participate” uses an awkward infinitive pattern, while “based on individual's spice tolerance level” is missing a determiner or possessive form. The sentence beginning “It has been so long that I have not prepared” also uses a tense construction that does not clearly express your intended meaning. Review verb patterns, articles and possessives, while continuing to practise varied sentence structures.
