IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You are a member of an International Students' club. The club is organising an event to celebrate popular food from around the world.

Write a letter to the event organiser, Luis. In your letter

  • offer to make a popular dish from your country
  • describe what this dish is
  • explain why it should be included in the event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to offer a dish that I would like to be presented at the event called Food Club, which is being held on the last Sunday of November, 2026. The dish is called Panipuri.

Basically, it is a very renowned dish in India. This dish contains a small, round, puffy puri, which is made out of semolina flour and is filled with smashed potatoes containing spices, along with flavoured water. When a person puts the whole puri in their mouth, it bursts inside the mouth and releases the flavour, which provides an unimaginable experience.

To be honest, the reason this food should be included in the event is that I would believe this dish can create a different position among other dishes, as it can be consumed differently from others. Furthermore, while people try this dish, they can feel the crunchiness along with the soft texture of Panipuri.

Thank you for considering my offer. I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Milan Bodar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare panipuri, explain its ingredients and eating experience, and give reasons for including it. The description of the puri, potato filling and flavoured water is specific, while the contrast between crunchiness and softness supports your case for its appeal. Your position remains clear throughout. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain more directly why the dish would suit an international celebration—for example, its popularity in India or how guests could share and experience a distinctive food tradition. The claim that it would create “a different position among other dishes” is difficult to interpret, so replace it with a precise benefit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce your offer, describe the dish, explain its appeal, and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “To be honest” make relationships between ideas visible. The progression is generally logical, with the description leading into your reasons for inclusion. Some connections could be more natural and precise, however. “To be honest” does not quite introduce a formal reason, and the sentence about creating “a different position among other dishes” interrupts the otherwise clear argument. Use a direct transition such as “I believe it would be a valuable addition because…” and connect the sensory details explicitly to the event’s purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary to describe the food, including “puffy,” “semolina flour,” “flavoured water,” “bursts,” and “crunchiness.” These choices help convey both its ingredients and sensory appeal, and the meaning is generally clear. There is also some attempt at more expressive language in “unimaginable experience.” However, a few phrases are imprecise or unnatural, particularly “create a different position among other dishes” and “smashed potatoes containing spices.” “Renowned” is understandable but less natural here than a word describing popularity. This meets the task’s vocabulary needs, but more accurate collocations and a more consistently appropriate tone would add flexibility and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You show a useful mix of sentence forms, including the relative clause in “a small, round, puffy puri, which is made…” and the time clause “When a person puts the whole puri in their mouth…”. Most sentences are controlled, and punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally clear. A few grammatical choices remain awkward. In “the reason this food should be included … is that I would believe,” the structure is unnecessarily indirect; use “I believe this food should be included because…”. Also, “a different position among other dishes” is grammatically possible but does not form a clear sentence meaning. Aim to express the reason in a simpler, direct clause while retaining the complex structures you already use effectively.
