Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing regarding the "food from around the world" festival, that will be held in the club next month. As far as I know, this is a celebration of different international worldwide cusinies. I would really love to participate in this amazing occasion.

As you know, I am from Egypt, and it is a delicious cuisine with various types of food. I would really appreaciate it if I could be a part of the festival with one of the Egyptian dishes "Koshari".

Koshari is a signifincantly delicious dish, consists of rice, pasta, chickpeas, black lentil, topped with spicy tomato sauce and crispy fried onion, and finally flavoured with hot sauce and garlic vinegar sauce. people mix all these ingredients togther and enjoy amazing taste.

This dish is so popular in my country, I think when tourists come to visit Egypt, they must specify a time to go to eat Koshari. it is so yummy and describe brefiely the taste of Egyptian cusinie. I believe other students will be happy to try it.

I would really appreciate your consideration and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully

Diana

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you offer to prepare koshari, explain its ingredients, and give reasons for including it, such as its popularity in Egypt and its appeal to students. The description is the most fully developed part, with details about rice, pasta, chickpeas, lentils, sauces and fried onion. The reason for inclusion is relevant but less developed: saying tourists should try it and that students will enjoy it would be stronger with a clearer link to what the dish contributes to an international food event. Your purpose and polite request are clear throughout. To strengthen the letter, explain more specifically how koshari represents Egyptian food or offers attendees a distinctive taste of your country.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce the event, make your offer, describe the dish, explain its popularity, and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “As you know” and “I believe” connect ideas. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. For example, “As you know, I am from Egypt, and it is a delicious cuisine” has an unclear reference, and the shift from the dish’s ingredients to “people mix all these ingredients” feels abrupt. The sequence is understandable, but more deliberate transitions and clearer references would make the progression more natural and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant food and event vocabulary, including “chickpeas,” “black lentil,” “crispy fried onion,” and “tomato sauce,” which makes the dish identifiable. There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “amazing occasion” and “flavoured.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “cusinies,” “appreaciate,” “signifincantly,” and “brefiely.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “international worldwide” is repetitive, while “describe briefly the taste” does not express your meaning clearly. Aim for accurate spelling and natural collocations, and choose precise language rather than relying on general praise such as “yummy” and “amazing.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the festival, that will be held in the club next month” and a polite conditional request with “I would really appreciate it if I could be a part.” The message remains understandable, but some sentence structures and punctuation need more control. For example, “Koshari is a significantly delicious dish, consists of…” joins two clauses incorrectly; use “Koshari is a delicious dish that consists of…” The sentence beginning “This dish is so popular in my country” also needs a conjunction or a full stop before “I think.” Capitalisation after full stops and sentence boundaries should be checked. More accurate complex sentences would improve clarity.
