Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

My name is jumoke, a member of the International Students Club. I am writing to you in respect to the event coming up soon to celebrate popular food from around the world. This event is one of its kind and i am sure it is going to be the talk of the town for a very long time.

In view of this, i am offering to make a popular dish from my Country Nigeria. This dish is a Special dish made during important events and it is usually made with so much love.

Furthermore this dish is made once in a while because of the stress of finding the ingredients used in preparing it. The dish is called Ikokore, it is made with cocoa yam which comes out once in a blue moon, other ingredients used are Panla fish, dried ponmo, beef, pepper and salt to taste. it can be paired with chilled palm wine.

This dish is delicious, nutritious and Unique, so i believe it would be a good idea to add it to the menu on the event, in addition to this, a lot of people will want to try out somethign new unlike the regular food we eat.

In Conclusion, adding this meal to the menu will encourage people to try out new menus as against what they are used to.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you offer to prepare Ikokore, explain that it is made with cocoa yam, fish and other ingredients, and give reasons for including it, such as its distinctive taste and the chance for guests to try something unfamiliar. The dish is described in enough detail for the organiser to understand what it is, and your enthusiasm is clear. The explanation that it is made for important events and is difficult to prepare adds useful context, although the reasons for its value to this particular event are somewhat general. To strengthen the letter further, explain more specifically what makes Ikokore representative of Nigerian food culture or especially suitable for an international food celebration. The response also includes eight words copied from the task prompt, which are not counted in the stated total.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce yourself and the event, make your offer, describe the dish, and explain why it should be included. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “In addition to this” make the relationships between ideas visible. However, some connections feel mechanical or repetitive: the final paragraph repeats the point that guests will try new food, and “In view of this” does not clearly show how the event itself leads to your offer. The description could also be ordered more smoothly by naming the dish first, then explaining its ingredients and preparation. More precise links and a conclusion that adds a final practical point would make the progression more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including specific food terms such as “cocoa yam,” “Panla fish” and “palm wine,” as well as phrases like “once in a blue moon” and “talk of the town.” These details make the letter personal and help convey the dish’s cultural character. Some choices are inaccurate or awkward, however: “in respect to” is not the natural phrase here, and “add it to the menu on the event” is an imprecise collocation. There are also spelling and capitalisation slips, including “somethign,” “Country” and “Unique.” Aim for more precise, natural phrasing and check spelling and capital letters; this would make your vocabulary more controlled without losing its specific detail.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including longer sentences that explain ingredients and give reasons, and the main message remains understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven, with errors in sentence boundaries, capitalisation and sentence construction. For example, “The dish is called Ikokore, it is made with cocoa yam” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; use a full stop or “and.” The opening fragment, “My name is jumoke, a member…,” would be clearer as “My name is Jumoke, and I am a member…”. Several sentences also begin with lowercase “i” or “it,” and the final sentence repeats an idea without a clear grammatical link to the preceding paragraph. Practise accurate clause joining and proofread sentence openings and punctuation.
